USB-C hub: unable to detect any network interface

  • Quote

Post by watain » Wed Oct 18, 2023 6:07 pm

I have a no-name USB-C hub with a rj45 interface which I can't seem to detect. Everything else from the hub works fine (power, HDMI, USB, card reader).
I have tried to load a bunch of different drivers, without success.

Any ideas what to try?

watain,

Sorting and grepping your lsusb we see

Code: Select all

$ sort watain | grep root
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 007 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
that you have a selection of USB2 and USB3 root hubs.

USB-C should be USB3 with added capabilities.

However ...

Code: Select all

Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 004 Device 065: ID 214b:7250 Huasheng Electronics USB2.0 HUB
Bus 004 Device 070: ID 214b:7250 Huasheng Electronics USB2.0 HUB
Bus 004 Device 071: ID 046d:c077 Logitech, Inc. Mouse
Bus 004 Device 072: ID 1908:0226 GEMBIRD MicroSD Card Reader/Writer
The root hub your USB-C hub is connected to is being forced into USB2 mode. That's a bad thing.

Exactly how is your USB-C hub connected?
If its connected to a USB-C port on your PC, do you have USB-C support in your kernel?

If its using a USB-A to C converter. Many of them are intended to charge USB-C devices only, so they only have the USB2 data pins connected.
If its a USB-A to C converter that supports USB3, the USB-C connector often needs to be connected the right way round for USB 3 to work.
That is, only one set of USB3 pins are connected but USB-C is reversable by design.

My USB-C hub connected over USB-C shows

Code: Select all

usb6 1d6b:0003 09 1IF [USB 3.10, 10000 Mbps, 0mA] (xhci-hcd 0000:07:00.3) hub
  6-1 0bda:0411 09 1IF [USB 3.00, 5000 Mbps, 0mA] (Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Hub) hub
    6-1.4 0bda:8153 00 2IFs [USB 3.00, 5000 Mbps, 288mA] (Realtek USB 10/100/1000 LAN 001000001)
Oh dear ... putting usb 214b:7250 into startpage.com says that the Vendor and Device ID belong to a USB2 device.
Still, the network port should work at 100MHz and even with no driver installed. the network port should appear in lsusb.
Regards,

Computer users fall into two groups:-
those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail.
