PBM: xfce4-screenshooter no longer copies to clipboard...

... after an upgrade.

Hi all.

I use clipboard extensively and I noticed xfce4-screenshooter no longer places images into the clipboard — be it entire screens, active windows or captured areas. This issue started after a recent upgrade. Note that saving images does work however, just copying to the clipboard silently fails.

I tried running xfce4-screenshooter from the command line in case it would say something but it just goes silent. I also couldn't see anything in .xsession-errors that would ring a bell.

I have a test profile, which I usually blank when I want to test stuff and from there xfce4-screenshooter behaves as expected. So I guess I need to clean up my profile a bit but I'd like to know what exactly as I really hate to blindly erase everything from .config, .cache and .local and redo all of my desktop configuration/theming again.

What directory/files should I clean so that screen capture works again with the clipboard?

Thanks in advance for any hint/suggestion.

Of course its file is ~/.config/xfce4/xfce4-screenshooter but the likelihood for it being a root cause seems low.
You might test whether it's specifically your own XFCE config by logging out, moving or renaming .config/xfce4, and trying to capture on another default profile. If it still didn't work, then there would be some other problem like your environment (.bashrc etc). If it works then you can start trying to narrow it down even more by moving things back in (overwriting the newly created default files) until it breaks again.
Was the upgrade just xcfe4-screenshooter, or all XFCE, or X11/GTK/etc things among many others, or some combination of all that?
Did you try quick & headless xfce4-screenshooter -f -c?
Can you also still take the screenshot from within GIMP? I'd suggest that as a painful but temporary workaround, if it still lets you snap/select/copy. Gimp 2.10 here does interact with the normal clipboard, from looking at it with--
Have you used something like xfce4-clipman-plugin, copyq, or qlipper? I run copyq and I have this idea that it would watch and maybe grab the contents in the off chance that it actually is storing the pixels, but then it or something else is deleting them.
Are you using aggressive optimization in CFLAGS? I only ask because the Random Problem Generator loves that...

edit: of course I'm using XFCE and I don't even know what you're using, so that bit about .config/xfce4 can perhaps be discarded.

p.s. off-topic: TIL that if I carelessly exported XDG_RUNTIME_DIR everywhere by dropping a bit into /etc/bash/bashrc.d, and I'm running XFCE 4.14 in X11, and after that I'm also running sway on a different VT, then xfce4-screenshooter and just about any other XFCE program from within XFCE-- in xfce4-terminal but not via launchers/menus-- utterly ignores $DISPLAY and shows up in sway, where DISPLAY=:1 and it also segfaults directly if I try to run it with -f -c as above. so that was a bad strategy

Thanks dbtx.

I am [was, actually] not using aggressive optimization CFLAGS, just Gentoo's. The sad thing is I had to reinstall my laptop and with another distribution. I've kept my Gentoo installation intact, as for the main files so I can try again later.

Nope, didn't do that.
Can you also still take the screenshot from within GIMP?
I forgot to tell but yes, that works.
I'd suggest that as a painful but temporary workaround[...]
Indeed, that's painful ;-) .
Have you used something like xfce4-clipman-plugin, copyq, or qlipper?
I didn't say: I'm using xfce4-clipman-plugin.

Erm... actually more like 200-300 packages. As it's (was) my main machine I only do/did upgrades unfrequently.
