Setting DPI for xorg (nouveau and high DPI screen)

Kernel not recognizing your hardware? Problems with power management or PCMCIA? What hardware is compatible with Gentoo? See here. (Only for kernels supported by Gentoo.)

Setting DPI for xorg (nouveau and high DPI screen)

Hi,

I have a laptop Huawei MateBook X Pro 13.9". The native resolution of the screen is 3000x2000 so I've been trying to set Xorg's DPI to some reasonable value.

I found this thread:
viewtopic-p-7210700.html
However none of the proposed changes to xorg configuration have any effect.

I'm using a kernel with KMS and nouveau driver enabled (compiled in the kernel image with the necessary firmware). Here is the info about the GPUs from lspci -k:

Code: Select all

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation UHD Graphics 620 (rev 07)
	Subsystem: Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. UHD Graphics 620
	Kernel driver in use: i915
01:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GP108M [GeForce MX150] (rev a1)
	Subsystem: Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. GP108M [GeForce MX150]
	Kernel driver in use: nouveau
Both modeset and nouveau always choose (96, 96) for DPI - I tried using UseEDIDDPI and DisplaySize options in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/, but those seem to be ignored (I still get (96, 96) in the logs).

Code: Select all

$ grep DPI Xorg.0.log
[  3060.936] (==) modeset(0): DPI set to (96, 96)
[  3060.937] (==) NOUVEAU(G0): DPI set to (96, 96)
Am I missing something about how nouveau sets DPI? Should I be looking to force this on a kernel level? Is there a kernel option I can specify for DPI for nouveau?

Here is the entire Xorg.0.log:

Code: Select all

What desktop environment (if any) are you using? I only use a window manager (DWM specifically) and I found that the 'Xft.dpi' option in my Xresources file works for what I need. I use a 24" 4k monitor where I set my DPI to 192 to get a usable monitor.

Here is what I have:

~/.Xresources

Code: Select all

austin@gentoo-r9 ~ $ cat .Xresources
Xft.dpi: 192
And then in my ~/.xinitrc

Code: Select all

austin@gentoo-r9 ~ $ cat .xinitrc
# Set DPI
xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources
However, see the HiDPI Arch wiki page that gives more info on this in the 'X Resources' section toward the middle-ish of the page.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HiDPI#X_Resources

If that solution works for you, you might also want to consider other variables like 'GDK_SCALE', 'QT_AUTO_SCREEN_SCALE_FACTOR' for additional scaling and possibly '_JAVA_AWT_WM_NONREPARENTING' if you are using a window manager like me.[/code]

Also worth noting that with the Xft.dpi setting at 192 my Xorg log still says "DPI set to (96, 96)" next to my driver name.

I'm using fluxbox (with lxdm for login). I'll try the `Xft.dpi` option. I haven't tried xrandr because I was thinking there should be a way to fix this without installing additional applications to patch what seems to be incorrect behavior of the drivers.

Thanks for the help!

I will test the proposed solutions as soon as I can (I screwed up my bios by trying to flash it to fix an audio problem so I first need to figure out how to fix that).

Randr is an extension to the X11 protocol. It's what enables you to resize, rotate, change refresh rate et cetera. Xrandr is the official tool for Randr. I wouldn't call it a "patch".
