Emacs inverse-video not active [Solved]

I'm a noob at emacs.
I created a .emacs file which now contains:

Now when I restart emacs, reported value is set accordingly, despite no effect on screen.
What am I missing?
As a workaround I know I can activate -rv as a command line argument, but it doesn't suit my needs.

Seems like inverse-video doesn't work.
So as a workaround

(set-background-color "black")
(set-face-background 'default "black")
(set-face-background 'region "black")
(set-face-foreground 'default "white")
(set-face-foreground 'region "gray60")
(set-foreground-color "white")
(set-cursor-color "red")

or alike in .emacs should suffice.

The workaround mentioned there puts this in your init file:

Bug report mentions some other sthings that works but I'm too of a noob to understand the differences yet.
