A proposal for good Gentoo web advocacy.

I notice a lack of acknowledgment about gentoo when it comes to the web pages from the programmers of applications. They often list off support for other distros but not Gentoo. There has never been a need to list Gentoo since Gentoo users get ther apps through the friendly portage 'emerge' system anyways. But, from a noob/non-gentoo user standpoint, Gentoo is lacking of presence and appears unsupported. Possibly even application designers are so deep in development that they don't have time to follow the latest and greatest in the world of linux distributions, and also are missing Gentoo's presence.

So I propose a gentoo package advocacy campaign. If you see a web site for one of your favorite ebuilds and the developer site lists off support for other distros but not Gentoo, kindly send them a note along with a link to the online gentoo package database with their app. They will be happy to see their work is available, and will easily put up the supplied link for all the multi-distro community to see.

Here is an example email that I sent to the Totem people:

Here is the URL for Gentoo's Totem package page so that you can include Gentoo in the list of available distros that use Totem.
Great app. Thanks.

Already got a response, and gentoo is now listed on the page.

Good idea.

You often see Redhat, Mandrake and Debian mentioned on software home pages, but never much mention of Gentoo, despite how popular it now is.

Bit ironic. It gives people the impression that installing things on Gentoo is difficult when its probably one of the easiest distro's around when it comes to package availability and ease of use.

Cool idea. I'll keep on the lookout in the future...

It's slightly odd putting the gentoo link in the binaries section, but I guess it's the the best choice.

Might want to just compile a list of the sites now, as people come across them. Then, send the letter when http://packages.gentoo.org is official (it's beta now)

That way, people only need to contact the developers once.

on waiting

Well packages.gentoo.org look great, but also like it won't be done for some time still. So I'd recommend people to link to the current section for now, because the important thing is to not wait on getting gentoo's name out there.
