no audio

I have installed gentoo on my PC, I have the internal sound card disabled and I'm relying on hdmi audio only, when I try using aplay here's what I get:

If I try running the same command as root:

(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
aplay: main:722: audio open error: No such file or directory

in my previous installation on the same machine, in smplayer I was able to select the alsa output I was using, now I only get the 'alsa' audio interface

I tried aplay -l, root listed hdmi, regular users showed no cards
added user to audio group and everything is working now
