Well, that's not spatial at all. What you want is browser mode without the toolbars. Well, it's very easy to get that: open a browser mode window, go to View->Main Toolbar and View->Location Bar and deactivate them! There you go.(...)reuse the same window as I navigate around the filesystem.
Don't mistake conscious decisions for bugs. This is a bug: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=335700 which will hopefully get fixed soon.this unified idiocy has drived me away from gnome
Fixing that bug is not accomodating for other DE's, there are good reasons to list the volume in fstab. My reason is: I want to share the mounted folder in samba, so I need the entry to set adequate permissions and ownership.So you want GNOME to accomodate other DEs
