(...)reuse the same window as I navigate around the filesystem.
Well, that's not spatial at all. What you want is browser mode without the toolbars. Well, it's very easy to get that: open a browser mode window, go to View->Main Toolbar and View->Location Bar and deactivate them! There you go. :)
this unified idiocy has drived me away from gnome
Don't mistake conscious decisions for bugs. This is a bug: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=335700 which will hopefully get fixed soon.
So you want GNOME to accomodate other DEs
Fixing that bug is not accomodating for other DE's, there are good reasons to list the volume in fstab. My reason is: I want to share the mounted folder in samba, so I need the entry to set adequate permissions and ownership.

That happens when you middle-click, as well.

I've only really recently started using gentoo, and have been using slackware with dropline gnome for quite some time. When I went from SW/DLG to Gentoo I had to move from 2.14.1 to 2.12.3, and have been dealing with some really heinous totem bugs and performance. When I was performing a few gentoo (re)installs I did the whole hackish, ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" =gnome-2.14.1 thing. I understand the reasons against using that method, but I was otherwise rewarded with a fairly good gnome setup (with a much more evolved totem/gstreamer combo). The "Upgrading to Gnome unstable" quide on the gentoo howto wiki doesnt seem to correlate to my system, and I was wondering if someone in this thread could give me a quick rundown on what I would need to do (after setting up x of course) to emerge the latest unstable gnome 2.14.1 stuff after a reinstall of gentoo. Hopefully the method would result in a gnome setup that could be upgraded during the time it takes for 2.14 to become stable, as well as after.

Thank you very much.

Gnome 2.14 has been removed from hard mask for testing, so you need to jump in at "Stable systems".

" Add Newly Unmasked Packages to package.keywords

The first group of files you'll need to list are precisely the same ones you just unmasked in /etc/portage/package.unmask. "

Well where do I get that list of files to unmask?

Have you made the transition to xorg 7.0 yet?

No. I'm on 6.8.2 right now. Gnome 2.14 will go with 7.0? Why is it asking me for 6.9? If both of these metabuilds come out stable around the same time I'm gonna have one hell of a smiling face...

Possibly the awk/sed command picked up Xorg 7.0 (it's in unstable now). I guess you could either purge the Xorg 7.0 packages from /etc/portage/package.keywords, or go for Xorg 7.0 now.

There aren't any of the xorg packages in /etc/portage/packward.keywords.

I'm having a problem with Gnome 2.14, the answer is probably somewhere in this thread, but I have no idea how to efficiently search this thread...

Anyway, the problem is that I have alot of strange devices in the Computer place of Nautilus. It should only show my two CD drives, the filesystem and network. However it also displays two NTFS partitions, the boot partitions, an "_i" device (I have no idea what this is) and a "Local Disk" device of which I have no idea what it is either.

How do I get these away? They weren't here before, only recently did they appear.

This bug: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=335700
has apparently been resolved upstream. Hopefully we'll see an ebuild incorporating the patch soon. :)

I've filed a bug report: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=137211
(my first, I hope I did it right)

Edit: It's in Portage now. Works well, except the icons in Nautilus don't update like I expected. I might need to rebuild a dependency, but the essential issue appears to be resolved.

Code: Select all

pkg_setup() {

so messing with the gconf entries will bring nothing.
No, this is of course assuming that you've compiled with --enable-compositor. I was referring to kmj0377 patching/changing the gconf code. I was under the impression he had already compiled with compositor enabled.
Ok, I tried it again, the shadows work, but everything else is blue for some reason 8O

So right now I've got a blue screen with shadows where all the bars and menus are.
Got the same "blue issue", did you find a solution for this?

I have the same problem. Cant retrieve the info...it just sits there and hangs...
Add me to the list about the weather applet not working in 2.14 and 2.14.1 gnome.

Add me to the list about the weather applet not working in 2.14 and 2.14.1 gnome.
Sometimes I have this problem and if I change my city/location in the prefs it works perfectly again. Don't know if you've tried this or not but it may be worth a shot.

People with problems with the gnome-weather-applet:

I found out that the applet does indeed work, however, some places don't. There are locations that simply will not update (and hang on updating...). To work around this, click on other locations (hopefully you can get one that is close to your area and reports relatively just as accurately). The ones that do work, update within seconds, the ones that don't, never do, so using that as a guide, click around.

I got mine to work in this way, but had to settle on perhaps not the best location.

Cheers.

Indeed, I have this problem with Tucson. If I try a nearby location (Tucson has a few weather stations) and then add in Tucson later, sometimes it'll work but it never works straight out of the box.

It's not a Gentoo problem; it's a problem with the applet, I believe, since my Debian boxes have had the same issue.

Yep. I think it's not a problem with the entire applet, but a localized problem that can be traced back to many of the specific locations. I have locations that always work and others that never do. I don't have any locations that sometimes work and sometimes don't.

I just notice that mounting of removable medias e.g. DVDs WORKS AGAIN in recent updates of Gnome 2.14* (unstable) if you want to mount it in /mnt/dvd instead of /media/"Media discription" and if you have an /etc/fstab entry for a device.

...but its's automounting.
