xorg configuration problems

Post by tsm23 » Sun Aug 05, 2007 2:11 am

Hi,

I recently decided to upgrade my 17" Macbook Pro gentoo installation to a newer kernel version, but I'm having a hard time getting x11 working. Following the advice at http://www.odi.ch/prog/macbookpro/index.php, I downloaded the 2.6.22.1 vanilla sources from kernel.org and applied the patches from mactel linux. My kernel config is a slightly modified version of the one at the site above (I have a first gen Macbook, so it's a core duo rather than a core 2 duo). I'm also using the same xorg.conf as linked to from the site. Finally, I'm using version 8.35.5 of the ati-drivers (though I've also tried 8.34.8 as recommended on the site). However, when I try to start x, I just get a blank screen. My xorg log is (sorry for the spam):

It's working out of the box for me with a 2.6.22-gentoo-r2-mactel and linux-uvc-0.1.0_pre100... Do you have the isight USE flag ?

Hi guyz,

I got a MacBook Pro v3 17" and get some problems as you can guess.

Currently the one which piss me off is about the sound. I can't have sound from the headphone, only from internal speakers. I use alsa's driver "hda-intel" with the kernel 2.6.22 (vanilla sources) . I tried them without any patch, with the mactel patches and also with the "je_fro" kernel sources and .config.
Nothing works.

Also, I can't switch to a text terminal with "alt-F2" for example. What can be the reason?

And, yes...the nvidia video card make me crazy :x With the "nv" driver I can't even watch a movie because it's too slow. With the vesa driver the resolution isn't the good one for widescreens and the nvidia's drivers are crapy.

Can someone help me please?

Thanks a lot.

For the people having trouble with a -v2, may I suggest you use my overlay ( layman -a je_fro ) and emerge:
mactel-linux-sources

take a look at my configs at http://dev.gentoo.org/~je_fro/mactel-linux-configs/
Really, I'm not out to destroy Microsoft. That will just be a completely unintentional side effect.

yes, i had troubles too and the backport included in mactel patches apparently didn´t help here. I used this diff and it works just fine, incl. headphones output.
Also, I can't switch to a text terminal with "alt-F2" for example. What can be the reason?
maybe because fn-key is enabled by default, so disable it or just hit fn+alt+F2.
And, yes...the nvidia video card make me crazy :x With the "nv" driver I can't even watch a movie because it's too slow. With the vesa driver the resolution isn't the good one for widescreens and the nvidia's drivers are crapy.
no trouble here at all with latest nvidia driver. Didn´t tried nv or nouveau (yet). Triplecheck your useflags, maybe you dont´have everything you need.

Also, you´ll need pommed-1.8 for backlight control & co keys, it went into portage last week iirc.

cheers

Thank you for your reply gringo.

When I applied this patch I got the following patch_realtek.c.rej:

maybe because fn-key is enabled by default, so disable it or just hit fn+alt+F2.
When I push fn+Fx It works like it should (Fx), but fn+alt+Fx didn't works at all.

no trouble here at all with latest nvidia driver.
Really?? I'm surprised because it seems that every sites about linux on MBP v3 talk about nvidia problems (crazy colors, etc...).
Are you talking about the "nvidia" closed driver? Which version have you tried?

When I applied this patch I got the following patch_realtek.c.rej:
how did you patch ? and against what tree ? It applies cleanly here against >2.6.23-rc1
When I push fn+Fx It works like it should (Fx), but fn+alt+Fx didn't works at all.
sorry, i have no clue ... wrong keymapping maybe ?

yes, latest binary driver from portage and no troubles at all.

i guess these look fine, there area few you wont need like apm or pmu and you have a few that dont exist afaik ( flash f.ex) but i don´t think your problem is use related after seeing these.

Ok, downloaded the latest kernel and the patch applied fine.

But sound still doesn't want to come out of the headphones :/

Did you also applied the mactel linux patches for this kernel? some other patches too?

Can you please send me your kernel .config file and your xorg.conf? it will help me a lot.

strange ... will triplecheck but i remember it working here. Headphone´s output isn´t muted, right ?

if i remember correctly mactel + uvesafb + hrt-x86_64-patches + powertop patch + suspend2 + the diff i linked before was all i apllied. Maybe some more random crap but nothing really relevant i guess. Most of the (trivial) mactel patches apparently did it into rc3 btw and i pulled from madwifi cvs to have support for the atheros wifi chip.
Can you please send me your kernel .config file and your xorg.conf? it will help me a lot.
sure, no problem. They are pretty standard btw, had no time to start tunning yet. Will upload them somewhere tomorrow and let ya know ;)

Ok, thank you very much!

I'm still in x86 arch, maybe should I change to x86_64.

emerge newuse aren't the funniest thing in the world but...;)

I have juste the following slots in alsamixer:
PCM - FRONT - LINE - CD - MIC - MICBOOS - IEC958 - PC SPEAK - CHANNEL

All are unmuted.

Thank you je_fro for your kernel config, it saves time! However, I think you have an error for an MBP2 the I2C driver should be Intel 82801 and not Intel 82810,

CONFIG_I2C_I801=y
# CONFIG_I2C_I810

and for CFLAGS, I have always read in these forums that you do not need -fomit-frame-pointer on amd64, enabled by default.

now my question is the update to madwifi to support the atheros in the MBP2 has been merged in the trunk and 9.3.2 was released on 08/14/07, so maybe people can use madwifi-ng-0.9.3.2 from portage, now. I am not sure, I do not know which modules to load...

EDIT: no probably next one will work, it seems.

EDIT: and the old ATA is not necessary in kernel .22, only SATA (I tried and booted).

well, thanks to a lot of reading I am nearly done, including beryl (MBP2 C2D, ~amd64, kernel .22)... however I still have a couple of problems:

1.
no suspend to ram, I have not tries suspend2, though, but s2ram and echo "mem" > /sys/etc. no success
EDIT: it worked once (at least) with s2ram -f -m! I emerged acpi and hibernate-support in the meantime, don't know whether this is related, I'll probably remove them and try again... later.

2.
and most annoying: the escape key does not work at the console or in X/gnome, [EDIT: SOLVED]

3.
Another thing, which is not working is the remote, but I have not tried it very much, actually.

4.
And the last things are the hpfsplus utilities, which segfault, so I have to reboot in OS X to fix my shared /home partition. And on the OS X side, I have no write support to ext3.

EDIT: two more things:
5.
the screen does not turn off on power saving, black but still on

6.
I could not get a large (two-monitors) display, yet, although trying with xorg.conf files found here and there on the net.

@bazouu i completely forgot the config file ... i just uploaded them here : kernel config and xorg.conf
Please use them as a reference, i really had not much time to start tunning and both files are a mess right now.

didn´t tried myself but i heard it just works as a keyboard extension, check with xev.

That's what I heard as well, but it does not work, maybe missing something somewhere...

I have put my kernel config on the wiki also, I started from je_fro's.
MBP2 C2D, gentoo kernel .22 + mactel, 64 bits.

Is it really necessary to run as a 64-bit processor? I was under the impression C2D was just a x86 processor with 2 cores. As you can probably tell from my question, I'm a kernel noob. If it is indeed necessary to run with ~amd64, maybe thats why my 2.6.22-gentoo-r5-mactel kernel just hangs and won't boot. I suppose it could also be the fact that i think my MacBook Pro is a -v3, if thats possible. Santa Rosa board(?) and a GeForce 8600M GT.

Which stage did you use to install gentoo? C2D is a 64-bits processor but runs just fine in 32-bits mode. That's up to you to install for 32 or 64 bits.

I followed a combination of the Gentoo Handbook, as well as the MacBook entry on the gentoo wiki. The liveCD didn't provide me with working network drivers so i built a vanilla 2.6.22 kernel w/ the sky2 driver, and used the sneakernet method to emerge dhcpcd.

As per the Gentoo Handbook, I downloaded the x86 stage3 tar as well as a portage snapshot. I'm beginning to think I missed some step to apply my declared variables from /etc/make.conf to the world or something like that. I've been thinking about the "source" command but i can't find much info on it from either source --help or man help. I havn't run source on anything seeing as I'm not 100% on exactly what it does.

is that to say it would run better under 64-bits?

Code: Select all

source filename
about line 3522. source reads a file as if you were typing its content in the shell. There is an amd64 handbook. If you can chroot in your install, you are probably fine. There are kernel configs on the wiki, you should probably take one from here, and compile and install your kernel + modules and update grub. If you have no success, you could open a new thread. BTW does grub start? does it find your kernel at all? You can have a minimal interactive shell in grub, and it has tab-completion.

Oh i've got a bootable kernel running w/ grub and everything all set. Currently the kernel is only vanilla 2.6.22 with no mactel patches. I was just planing to use this kernel as a stepping stone to get a gentoo-sources kernel with mactel patches working, because the kernel on the LiveCD wouldn't get me online. I emerged =gentoo-sources-2.6.22-r5 and applied mactel-patch-2.6.22 and used the kernel .config from the gentoo wiki. I can't remember exactly what it said, but it said something about speeding up or optimizing process 0, then 1. At that point it just hangs out for all eternity. I've been reading random posts containing "Macbook" (searched) and it seems like the "stable" kernel for macbooks would be 2.6.20.

Then, you should use your working config for configuring the gentoo+mactel one! you can try "make oldconfig" it will ask you about the new stuff only.

Ok I used make oldconfig and it updated the .config I used from my bootable kernel, but still hangs, with the following lines:

Code: Select all

Switched to high resolution mode on CPU 1
Switched to high resolution mode on CPU 0
This occurs on both gentoo-sources-2.6.22-r5 as well as gentoo-sources-2.6.22-r5-mactel.

Installation on Santa Rosa Macbook Pro

Post by haveaniceday » Tue Sep 18, 2007 8:52 am

Hello there,
as I have problems finding the necessary information in this big thread, I will ask directly:
What is the best way to install Gentoo on a santa rosa macbook pro. I have already a linux partition, but I'm not really sure how to install as there re obviously various probems with drivers.
Could someone who has done the installation give me a short help, so that I don't have to download a livecd which doesn't work?
Thank you in advance!
