What File Managers are there?

  • Quote

Post by Rwilson » Mon Mar 29, 2004 5:49 am

I ask this question due to the fact that instead of running KDE or Gnome, I'm using WindowMaker, which has left me Filemanager-less. Just in case I'm using the wrong word for it, I'm referring to programs of the same nature as the Gnome's Nautilus and KDE's Konqueror. All help appreciated!

You can still use the gnome or kde file managers. I use mc in an xterm, with icewm. Very light weight, and fast, especially good for a slow ass box like mine.

I am using openbox and ls :P

actualy for a gui file manager I use nautilus. I had to load a bunch of the gnome libs for a couple of programs so I just use it. Be sure to use it with the option --no-desktop otherswise it starts the gnome desktop.

I'll second Rox. It's a bit ugly to start with but once its themed and you learn its methods its damn fast and nice to use.

Actually, I find that I can do anything with ROX that I would want to do with a file manager. What feature are you thinking of that it would be missing? ROX is very tunable and thus quite powerful.

Folder tree is missing for example.

Another vote for ROX as GUI, for the rest I'm using Midnight Commander from http://mc.linuxinside.com/cgi-bin/dir.cgi ( IMHO much better and takes much less memory

:) :) :) )

I used ROX for a while and then switched back to MC, cause rox doesn't like non UTF locales :( I wich there were something like nautilus, which wouldn't need all those gnome (or kde) libs.

Yepper!

Gentoo is what I've been using for quite a while now...
It took a little to get used to, but it's neat, quick and heavily customizable.

Just don't get confused with the obvious clash of name 8O
