The vmware program is available for download from their webpage.. but you need a valid registration key for it to work...

no there is no cvs or free version of vmware - you need a code either way.

it's free to download (hence the portage version), and you can get a 30 day trial code.

Yes it does need a serial number, which can be purchased from
here...

Buy here

Anyway, the reason it is in portage is the same reason most programmes are in portage; so they can be easily installed with all dependencies worked out and installed as necessary and so all the files are in the correct place.

If vmware is too expensive, maybe you would like to try win4lin or codeweavers.

It is a commercial program, therefore you need to buy the license to get the serial.

You can get a free 30 day trial serial number from vmware. Just sign up on their web site and they will mail you one.

When i tried vmware before they did this. Not 100% if they still are though.

Why is VMWare 4.5 Workstation in Gentoo??

  • Quote

Post by znmeb » Sun Mar 28, 2004 2:19 am

I was browsing my Portage tree this morning and discovered this:

* app-emulation/vmware-workstation
Latest version available: 4.5.1.7568
Latest version installed: [ Not Installed ]
Size of downloaded files: 39,870 kB
Homepage: http://www.vmware.com/products/desktop/ws_features.html
Description: Emulate a complete PC on your PC without the usual performance overhead of most emulators

Is VMWare Workstation now "free software"? DId I miss an announcement about that? Last time I looked, VMWare Workstation 4.5 was a commercial product, with a hefty price tag of $299US. I have a copy running on my Windows machine and love it. I would love it even more if it were free.

Portage has quite a few commercial software items in it. When you install that, you still need your license key. Just because it's in portage doesn't mean its free :)

No, it's not free. Just because there is an ebuild doesn't make something free as in beer.

But if you have a licence, or want to try if for 30 days, then there is a handy ebuild to help get it on your system.

I was actually very glad to find it in the portage :)

I avoid installing things that are not in the portage as they sometimes tend to break other things (noticed it with Debian).

(I wouldn't mind to see VMware getting free, but software that good hardly will be....)

I signed up for beta, but never got a license :(.

I would not call $299 "hefty". Actually it is quite cheap if you have good use for it.
I've been doing .MSI-packaging and other win32 administrative stuff that needed lots of testing for quite a long time. VMware can save you so much time there. All my VMs are running with nonpersistent disks so I simply have to turn them off and on again to get to a predefined state without any garbage left by previous tests.

:twisted: #serialz
not that I would ever do that. :twisted:

The whole reason for ME having Linux is to stop feeding from the hand of proprietary software. Especialy a company that will sue a Teenager for making a domain that was a play on words (mikerowsoft.com I belieave) as copy right infringment. Don't forget Lindows. I have no need for Vmware, nor do I want to have, or even want anything to do with M$. It's a shame that I'm still somewhat dependant on Windows, and that I wasted my teenage years (and some of my adult life) with what is poor OS, when I was best friends with the son of one of the guys that set up GTE's UNIX system in the northern Virgina area, I could have learned so much! Sorry I'm a hothead about some issues. don't get me started on the RIAA or MPAA or people that drug their children to cover up their bad parenting. OH, yeah and the DRUG WAR, HA!

vmware is a _very_ nice tool for those of us who need to run those pesky Windows-only applications

@drahz:
vmware != windows || M$

vmware just simulates a pc, you can run any operating system inside: Win, dos, Linux, *bsd, solaris...

Yes, it's payware. It can be handy to have it in portage, but I think there should be a note in the package description.

I agree. Perhaps a seperate app-proprietary section?

Actually, I don't see why it is such a big issue that VMWare is in portage, those who want it without paying for it will get it anyway, this just makes it easier for those with legitimate uses for it.

Why? I think seperate sections for proprietary software would give an unnecessary feeling of guilt for using them. Remember, we are not RMS' bitches.. unlike Debian.

Perhaps filtering by license would be nice, since the ebuilds have license info.

Quick question: Dos the fact that it's in the portage mean when you emerge it, you actually get the source code or just the binaries?

just the binaries, m'am..

portage is a package management system, non-specific to binaries/source
