I tried: reemerging libwww, autoconf, libtools -> doesn't help
I tried: env-update (you never know) -> doesn't help

Now I'm out of ideas.

Please suggest somthing.

You probably want to re-emerge automake.

i had problems compiling since new gcc was emerged to my computer... you maybe want to look into your CFLAGS...

checked my CFLAGS.. seems ok. Experimented with USE Flags.. didnt Help..

Hi,

I've got exactly the same problem. It seems to be that annoying #. If I go look at the makefile (/var/tmp/portage/libwww-5.4.0-r2/work/w3c-libwww-5.4.0/Makefile.am) I can see it there (its tabbed, I think automake wants it at the beginning of a line), but when I change it, of course emerge libwww overwrites that whole directory again. I get the same error messages as fir3fly, but /usr/bin/automake-1.7 exists so its not an automake thing. Is there any one-time hack I can do to change this makefile to make the package compile?

I found this bug report for our problem: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=41959 - but they seem to say its closed now with -r2, will see if I work out how to say it isnt

Do you happen to have net/libs in your portage-overlay?
I did. removing the ebuild from there lead to the "real" -r2.ebuild being used and solved the problem. strange ways this portage has, indeed...

EDIT: oops, wrong, doesn't build as above, but builds, if you add a simple autoheader to the autoconf, etc. in the ebuild.

sorry, I was suggesting that you maybe have the libwww-5.4.0-r2.ebuild copied to /usr/local/portage/net-libs/, because you needed something else to edit there. But if you don't know what the PORTAGE_OVERLAY is for, then you probably haven't...

Just to give closure to this, thanks to the gentoo team, this bug has now been fixed. run emerge sync && emerge libwww, and everything should be fine!
