My resolution in XF86Config-4 won't stay. When I first changed it to 1024x768 and rebooted I still was in 1280x1024. The next day, to my suprise, I turn on the computer and 1024x768. Jumpin' jahosaflat, yee'haw! But, if I reboot or restart X, it changes back to 1280x1024. Once this happens I have to wait till tommarow for my resolution to go back to 1024x768. Rebooting or powering off and back on does nothing.
EDIT: Come to think about it, whatever was happening, was happening even before I did the resolution change. Because only the first time I ran X in a given day my fonts were larger than all the rest of the times in that day.

If you edit the xf86Config file and remove any reference to 1280x1024 you should be left with a mximum resolution you desire.....

Code: Select all

# **********************************************************************
# Screen sections
# **********************************************************************

# Any number of screen sections may be present. Each describes
# the configuration of a single screen. A single specific screen section
# may be specified from the X server command line with the "-screen"
# option.
Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "ATI Graphics Adapter"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth 24
    #Option "backingstore"

    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "1024x768"
ViewPort 0 0 # initial origin if mode is smaller than desktop
# Virtual 1280 1024
    EndSubsection
EndSection

I had the same problem using the generic ATI Radeon driver. I fixed it by doing a emerge ati-driver restarting and generating a X config file by typing fglrxconfig.

This is, quite possibly, the first time I've ever heard of someone complaining that X put them in too *high* a resolution.

Why the hell would I want to do that? Then even the first time I startx in a given day I will have "1280x1024". I want "1024x768"! This peice of crap replacement monitor is only 15 inches and exteremely blurry. Stupid trinitron crapped out on me.

if you set the "Virtual" option, X will throw away any modes that are larger than your virtual screen.
So this should work:

Code: Select all

 Subsection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" "640x400"
ViewPort 0 0 # initial origin if mode is smaller than desktop
        Virtual 1024 768
    EndSubsection
EndSection
(It's always good to have some standard modes for lower reolutions around for fullscreen apps like video players and games.)

Oh, and X leaves a fairly verbose log in /var/log/XFree.0.log. Useful to get hints for problems such as this, especially if you "startx -- -logverbose 5"
Please put [SOLVED] in your topic if you are a moron.

The modeline doesn't affect anything. And the virtual things makes it like 1024x768 but I dont see the whole screen. I have to pan around the viewable area. If I look at my monitor menu it says that its at 1280x1024, so basically it is just zooming in on a 1024x768 section of a 1280x1024 resolution. BTW I just emerged ati-drivers 3.7.6 and fglrxconfig'd and that did nothing.
