Error opening terminal: xterm. [Solved]

Hello,

I just recently did an "emerge sync" and "emerge -uD world".
I'm running KDE version 3.2.0 and KONSOLE version 1.3

Now when I try and use "nano" to edit files I get this error. Searching on the forums hasn't helped.

Example:

Code: Select all

toast@fusion1 toast $ nano -w newfile.txt
Error opening terminal: xterm.
As root I get the same error.

The two other weird things are that:
1) I can "cat [filename]" just fine. But.....
2) If I use "less [filename]", it works but I get the following....

Example:

Code: Select all

toast@fusion1 toast $ less pydu.py
WARNING: terminal is not fully functional
pydu.py (press RETURN)
Ofcourse, if I hit return, "less" parses through the given file just fine.

No what I find really puzzeling is that if I choose "Linux console" from the dropdown list of choices inside of "Konsole", I don't run into any of these problems. The error only seems to happen when using KDE's Konsole shell?

What do I need to do to get KDE's Konsole Shell to use "nano" again?
"ncurses was one of the files emerged." "ncurses-5.4" And this seems to be the only thing that might be related but its beyond me at this point.

Thanks,

maybe you need to recompile the kde package that contains konsole. you can find out by using qpkg -f /location/of/exec.

Code: Select all

bash-2.05b$ qpkg -f /usr/kde/3.1/bin/konsole
kde-base/kdebase *
remerge kdebase and see what happens.

Thanks for the help ctford0.

I tried your suggestion and this is what I got:

Code: Select all

toast@fusion1 toast $ qpkg -f /usr/kde/3.1/bin/konsole
kde-base/kdebase *
kde-base/kdepim *
I remerged "kdebase" and "kdepim".

I'm still getting the same results.

Code: Select all

toast@fusion1 toast $ nano -w pydu.py
Error opening terminal: xterm.
I tried the above test right after remerging "kdebase" and got the same results. Logged out and back in. Same thing. Then remerged "kdepim" did the same things and I still get the same results. I have know clue.. I've googled... but am still clueless as to what I could possible check to help isolate what, where the problem is.

Any other tips are very appreciated.

Thanks,

I'm having the same difficulty, but re-emerging ncurses do not resolv it. Whatever console editor I use, it will bork on a similar problem. In vim, it say that "linux" can't be found in terminfo. I get the same as the poster above with nano.

All in all, I can't edit files while i'm natively booted, but it works fine when I boot with Fedora Core CD and chroot on Gentoo.
(7 of 9) Installing star-trek/species-8.4.7.2::talax.

I'm having this problem too. The difference is that it all works fine for root, but for users I get the "Error opening terminal: xterm" message.

I have tried to re-emerge ncurses but it didnt help.
