boot error: "failed to chase and open directory"

Did a world update and now having problems.

When booting I get a slew of error messages. Some of them start with "failed to chase and open directory" and reference files like:

/usr/local/lib/tmpfiles.d
and
/etc//udev/udev.conf.d

Neither of those directories exist. Have they been removed or is the system looking for them for the first time? I'm not sure.

My system boots to the console. From there I start slim as my login manager. Now slim will start as normal, but I have no keyboard and can't log in. Nor can I get back to the console once X has started.

Also from the console I have no internet. From the console I can log in, view file system, all that sort of stuff.

/var/log/messages:

Xorg.0.log:

Looking at the output of /var/log/messages, there's a regular message:

Code: Select all

Activated service 'org.freedesktop.nm_dispatcher' failed: The permission of the setuid helper is not correct
which is probably referring to `dbus-daemon-launch-helper`; this failure might be causing a cascade of problems. On my system, the permissions are:

Code: Select all

$ ls -l /usr/libexec/dbus-daemon-launch-helper
---s--x--- 1 root messagebus 67648 Mar 14 2025 /usr/libexec/dbus-daemon-launch-helper
But even if this is not the underlying cause of the issues you're facing, addressing it might make it easier to find the actual cause in the logs.

Also, are you using OpenRC or systemd? The logs containing the "failed to chase and open directory" might show some important context. OpenRC logging is enabled via `rc_logger` in /etc/rc.conf; in terms of systemd, i don't use it myself, but i presume journalctl can provide the relevant logs.

I'll assume you're on openrc (because you pastebinned /var/log/messages).

Do you have systemd-tmpfiles-setup in your boot runlevel ? (part of systemd-utils, not systemd). It should create those directories.

Also, I wonder why it's looking for /usr/local/lib/tmpfiles.d ?
