The Gentoo Big Forum Upgrade - Discussion

Discussion topic for the accounced The Gentoo Big Forum Upgrade

Very high praise mega thank you to sam_ for helping out with the infra side, and being a general motivator along the way (this goes for the rest of the team of course as well!).

Also big thanks to antarus for what we did and learned from the latest try, and John R. Graham before that!

And on the stylish side, fedeliallalinea did the Gentoo 20XX theming, and might be working on the dark side as time allows for it!

The non-20XX light and dark ones are by me, based on JRG's work from before, and are supposed to represent the phpBB2 style we had.

We'll probably add more as time goes by.
Kindest of regardses.

congratulations and thanks to all involved. It's actually quite a noticeable difference how much snappier the content renders and reflows* now that it's modern HTML and not a bit <table>. Looks like a big improvement, especially for mobile.

Chiitoo
A very big thank you for all the hard work getting this long overdue project over the finish line.
This should not lesser all the other work from all the other ppl who have tried and supported this project, but getting it done is the most important step.

Thank you.

Isn't 12 characters password length requirement a bit too much for a forum?

And where's my AI!!! :)

p.s. I'm feeling nostalgia already...

Thank you for not using Discourse!
And for the hard work, of course. I like it quite a lot, and it still feels like a natural evolution, as the original look and feel was kept quite well. :)
I already use the new Genthree.

Smart, making the change over All Fools Day; if it breaks, just claim it was a joke :-)

Seriously though, well done!

What I don't understand:
Why do some "Last post"s have the thread title while others do not?

Not every post has a subject and never did. It does not have to echo the topic's.

Ah, makes sense. I thought those were the topic titles, not the post titles. Thank you.

I was slightly confused about the titles too for a while, though there was something else adding to it too: Some forums showed "No posts" even though they clearly had posts, which was fixed by posting something there (and I then deleted said posts).

I'm guessing they might have had one of those "phantom posts" for the last post, which got dropped during migration.

Also super special thanks to sam_ who was extremely helpful and encouraging during it all.

I'd probably still be wrestling with nginx configuration without him being there!
Kindest of regardses.

nginx is a beast. The older I get, the more I like Caddy (on non-OpenBSD systems, of course). But I understand that Gentoo’s web infrastructure might be complex enough to justify nginx.

It appears that some Custom BBCode did not translate in the upgrade. e.g. Bug.
A mod or the user can fix it by editing the post and resubmit without any change

Yeah, custom BBcodes were not carried over at all, and it seems that they are parsed only when editing/posting initially, though I thought I had seen old links working while testing... but maybe I didn't.

Seems less than optimal certainly, but I wonder if parsing them on-the-fly would be too heavy, or of there is some other reason it was not done that way.

Will look into if they could be fixed in some not-so-manual way...

That also means any later edits made to the BBcode won't be applied.

Oh, I probably should reset it for now to be without styling, which the bug one now has, that's on testing level, and dark themed-like:

To me it appears that some did but more recent posts did not. I only edited 2 of my own posts but reviewing others later in my history showed them correctly.

Is there a reason why the min password length was increased to 12?

TBF I've never considered this account very "valuable" and had a very short, site unique, and, probably easily brute forceable password but it still probably depends on someone stealing the password database. Now having to remember a new password after using the same one over 20 years is going to make me forget my new password... aaahhhhhhhhgh

You've posted about it already, just wait for a reply. You could chuck in a "Thank you" in this post, though :)

Hmmmm yeah, I see some work, and editing the topic one just now it does update in older posts.

I do see some posts from last year that don't work though, too, so there's something definitely happening there.

Will investigate more, thanks!

Perhaps we'll get used to it, just in time for phpbb-4. :]

(I think it will be mostly under-the-hood changes though for that one.)

I'm simply not going to remember it and would count on my email when I lose it. I didn't even try to think of a new one, I used a generated password and saved it.
