systemd: enter passphrase for cryptsetup

Post by dgouders » Sat Mar 28, 2026 1:15 pm

Hi,

I'm running an openrc system with an encrypted /home and that lets me enter
the passphrase at system start via /etc/init.d/dmcrypt.

Now, I am playing with a system where I am trying out systemd and I wonder
what to do to get the passphrase-dialog when the system starts.

Regards,

Dirk

Usually you want enable dmcrypt at boot time with systemctl enable <service>

Is there a problem?

Well, there is no dmcrypt service for systemd.

But, I found the crypsetup USE-flag for systemd and hope that brings in systemd-crypsetup.

Still compiling...

Yes, now I have systemd-cryptsetup.

I now have to learn how to configure it.

I'll try to extend the dm-crypt wiki, after all that.

Dirk

Thank you for the link.

Is that the dm-crypt wiki entry that points to it? I cannot find that pointer...
