portage wants to re-emerge same packages everytime [SOLVED]

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

portage wants to re-emerge same packages everytime [SOLVED]

Post by Lebkoungcity » Sun Mar 22, 2026 6:58 pm

Hello,

for some time now, some packages are being re-emerged over and over again on one of my systems. First I didn't mind because I thought this might be some kind of issue that will sort itself out when some specific package gets updated. But now it becomes an annoyance.

I use a chroot to build the packages for this system for it's an old ThinkPad with a Pentium-M and 2GB RAM but it's all the same on the ThinkPad and inside of the chroot. And the built binaries are never considered by portage, it wants to compile theses packages everytime anew. And: There is no error or other kind of failure.

My main question is: What is the root cause for this? How could I have found out what causes these rebuilds?

Here you see the ending of such an emerge and my usual habit of etc-update and emerge -a --depclean followed by another try if portage wants to re-emerge the packages it emerged successfully just a minute ago:

Code: Select all

(...)
--- replaced dir /usr/include
--- replaced obj /usr/bin/qalc
--- replaced dir /usr/bin
--- replaced dir /usr
>>> Regenerating /etc/ld.so.cache...
>>> Original instance of package unmerged safely.
>>> sci-libs/libqalculate-5.9.0 merged.
>>> Regenerating /etc/ld.so.cache...

>>> Completed (9 of 9) sci-libs/libqalculate-5.9.0::gentoo

 * GNU info directory index is up-to-date.
 * After world updates, it is important to remove obsolete packages with
 * emerge --depclean. Refer to `man emerge` for more information.
(chroot:x86-concordia) ishtar / # etc-update
Scanning Configuration files...
Exiting: Nothing left to do; exiting. :)
(chroot:x86-concordia) ishtar / # emerge -a --depclean

 * Always study the list of packages to be cleaned for any obvious
 * mistakes. Packages that are part of the world set will always
 * be kept. They can be manually added to this set with
 * `emerge --noreplace <atom>`. Packages that are listed in
 * package.provided (see portage(5)) will be removed by
 * depclean, even if they are part of the world set.
 *
 * As a safety measure, depclean will not remove any packages
 * unless *all* required dependencies have been resolved. As a
 * consequence of this, it often becomes necessary to run
 * `emerge --update --newuse --deep @world` prior to depclean.

Calculating dependencies... done!
>>> No packages selected for removal by depclean
>>> To see reverse dependencies, use --verbose
Packages installed:   937
Packages in world:    94
Packages in system:   50
Required packages:    937
Number removed:       0
(chroot:x86-concordia) ishtar / # emerge -tauvDNUk world --keep-going --with-bdeps=y

These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

There are 3 backtracks. It's completely possible there are multiple ways around the issue and portage picking up different route on every sync, influenced by the changes in versions and so on.

What happens when you add --backtrack=0 to the command?

On a second note:

Code: Select all

 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86"
What is that? You have a 64 bit cpu but accepting x86 keyworded packages?

Probably same as https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1177060.html ?

Exactly what I had in mind but wasn't able to find it!

But I don't see skipped updates here?

It's a chroot to build binaries for a x86-machine:

I don't see them either just because there aren't any. No failures, nothing. So I suspect this is the same thing but I don't know. Therefore I'm asking for help here. And: How should I find out which package causes this re-emerge-loop?

If it didn't break with backtrack=0 then your issue is resolved for the time being. Did you let those packages rebuild before posting that output? If so, post it again when other rebuilds appear, before rebuilding them.

Thanks for you input. But I can't consider this as resolved because:
a) I have no idea what caused this re-emerge-loop and have no idea on how to resolve this thoroughly and not just a symptom. I'm one of those weird kind of people who want to understand the causes.
Lebkoungcity wrote:My main question is: What is the root cause for this? How could I have found out what causes these rebuilds?
b) Because this chroot is used to build binaries for a somewhat underpowered system (measured by today's requirements) and in this special case the built binaries of these packages in question aren't considered by portage, I would need to compile boost and nodejs on this x86-system meaning quite some hours of compile time. Which is something I would rather avoid.

Forgot one answer:

No, I didn't.

Sam thinks it's the same bug referenced above. Could you please try with portage-9999?

OK, that's it!

I emerged sys-apps/portage-9999 and then executed the known emerge -tauvDNUk world --keep-going --with-bdeps=y but a problem with x11-themes/qtcurve became visible. After removing x11-themes/qtcurve I was able to give emerge -tauvDNUk world --keep-going --with-bdeps=y another try and it showed a clean output.
