Is it possible to install proxmox on gentoo ?

I searched the repository but there's no results for proxmox

I rather have a gentoo host to run the proxmox application.

Not sure if the gentoo kernel have all the stuff it takes for kvm virtualization and iommu/vfio etc..

The Gentoo kernel is upstream plus patches, or can be a straight upstream kernel. Whether it has the required features built will depend on whether you enable them. I know many users run KVM-based guests on a Gentoo host. We have questions about that somewhat often.

Well, proxmox is basically a distribution by itself (based on Debian), not just a software package. Adapting it to Gentoo would be quite some work, kernel support being just one issue.

Seems the first step would be to try it out on a systemd enabled Gentoo installation?

The "distribution" is incorrect. PVE is based on Debian, so maybe a little bit of messy patching (if they don't treat it like a package itself), but otherwise I do not see any showstopper barrier.

Who else want to contribute/work on this?

This is an very old topic, but what Genone already said, proxmox is not a single application by itself. It is a name for a solution which utilizes many software applications into one. Including settings and configurations for the base OS.

It would be a better way to ask in the proxmox forums if somebody there has already done this.

Which is exactly what I said. Just like Ubuntu is based on Debian. Or countless other specialty distributions.

Nobody said that it is impossible.
However the amount of work required would be quite significant. Basically you'd have to take the complete Proxmox repository apart and adapt it to Gentoo standards.

There is a reason Proxmox is primarily distributed as an ISO to be installed on hardware, secondary as a Debian package repository and no options for any other platform.
