GIMP: LANG cannot be C or POSIX (+/- solved)

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

GIMP: LANG cannot be C or POSIX (+/- solved)

I was running an update and it stopped at GIMP with an error I haven't seen before:

Code: Select all

>>> Emerging (1 of 11) media-gfx/gimp-3.0.8-r1::gentoo
 * gimp-3.0.8.tar.xz BLAKE2B SHA512 size ;-) ...                                                                                                                                                                     [ ok ]
 * Cannot use LANG=C.UTF-8 as it cannot be C or POSIX
 * ERROR: media-gfx/gimp-3.0.8-r1::gentoo failed (setup phase):

 * The specific snippet of code:
 * die "en_US.UTF-8 isn't available and cannot fallback to user locale, bug #969468"
 *
 * If you need support, post the output of `emerge --info '=media-gfx/gimp-3.0.8-r1::gentoo'`,
 * the complete build log and the output of `emerge -pqv '=media-gfx/gimp-3.0.8-r1::gentoo'`.
 * The complete build log is located at '/var/tmp/portage/media-gfx/gimp-3.0.8-r1/temp/build.log'.
 * The ebuild environment file is located at '/var/tmp/portage/media-gfx/gimp-3.0.8-r1/temp/die.env'.
 * Working directory: '/var/tmp/portage/media-gfx/gimp-3.0.8-r1/empty'
 * S: '/var/tmp/portage/media-gfx/gimp-3.0.8-r1/work/gimp-3.0.8'
I have not changed anything concerning the locale setting since installing the pc. All previous updates went fine for GIMP. Locale is set as follows:

Code: Select all

eselect locale list
Available targets for the LANG variable:
  [1]   C
  [2]   C.UTF-8 *
  [3]   POSIX
  [4]   fr_BE.UTF-8
  [ ]   (free form)
Should I just add en_US.UTF-8 so it has a fallback? I'm a bit scared as right now I have the glyphs I need available and it is always a struggle to get that right. So I would prefer not to change anything in the locale.

As I read the comments in the bug report, [bug=969468#c5]upstream changed the requirements[/bug] because [bug=969468#c9]"The issue was that using a non UTF-8 locale lead to the generation of un-localised menu entries."[/bug]

As I read the ebuild, you could use a prebuilt binary, since this is in pkg_setup. You could set a compatible LANG. It looks like C, POSIX, or things that start with C. are rejected, so switching to your locale #4 entry might work.

Thanks. I set the locale to "fr_BE.UTF-8" and it did compile. But I only compiled GIMP and then changed back as I don't trust what else will change. Localisation is a pita to get right. I want my interface in english but I do need to be able to write french and have filenames etc with french characters in. And for my music library there are also scandinavian characters, east-european etc.

I can understand they want UTF-8 but I would think that C.UTF-8 complies with that requirement?
