Midi playback not working in wine

  • Quote

Post by elmbroken » Sat Jan 24, 2026 5:58 am

can someone pls help? I'm trying to get midi playback working so I can listen to the Touhou Mother soundtrack while I'm actually playing it, but when I run

Code: Select all

aplaymidi -p128:0 /home/elmbroken/roms/TouhouMother/Data/Music/Brinstar.mid

(path to well, a midi file btw) nothing happens, I have fluidsynth installed and the fluidsynth service running, and my config file in /etc/conf.d/fluidsynth looks like this

Code: Select all

# Additional options to pass to FluidSynth
FLUIDSYNTH_OPTS=""
# Path to the SoundFont
# For playback of general MIDI files, media-sound/fluid-soundfont is a good
# choice. The SoundFont is located at /usr/share/sounds/sf2/FluidR3_GM.sf2
SOUND_FONT="/usr/share/sounds/sf2/FluidR3_GM.sf2"

Any help will be greatly appreciated, as I have been trying to figure this out for multiple days
Thanks in advance!

Could you elaborate on "nothing happens"? Does aplaymidi just return to a prompt without any output? Does it give any output to indicate that it's playing the file, while there's no sound?

i assume that audio is otherwise working without issues? Can you confirm that all the relevant volume controls (as e.g. shown by alsamixer(1)) are both unmuted and at a reasonable level?

Sorry, was really tired when sending that one, when I run that command, no sound plays and it just hangs on the terminal, no output (as in sound output) or anything
(when i mean hang I mean)
elmbroken% aplaymidi -p128:0 /home/elmbroken/roms/TouhouMother/Data/Music/Brinstar.mid
(just nothing here, no output, no return back to terminal, nothing)
And with alsamixer, nothing seems to be muted, I'm not sure where you would find midi output settings in there n stuff
Hope this helps! Thanks in advance!

Okay, thanks.

Can you confirm that your kernel build makes the snd-seq-midi module available (cf. e.g. this section of the 'Rosegarden' wiki page)? Can you also confirm that that the port you specified in your aplaymidi command line is correct?

(i'm no expert on this stuff - there are people on these forums who are definitely more knowledgable - but i thought we could at least check the basics.)

I'm using gentoo-kernel-bin, so I'm pretty sure it's already installed, and yep, I check with aconnect -o, heres the output

Code: Select all

client 14: 'Midi Through' [type=kernel]
    0 'Midi Through Port-0'
client 128: 'FLUID Synth (1513)' [type=user,pid=1513]
    0 'Synth input port (1513:0)'
client 129: 'FLUID Synth (2)' [type=user,pid=2983]
    0 'Synth input port (2:0)'
128 should be correct, no?
Please keep helping, thanks in advance! (elmbroken)
