After finding out that my make.conf was empty https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1176641.html I put that right and then started "emerge -uvUD @world". It mostly concerned missing USE flags. This ran fine for some time untill it got at dev-qt/qtcore-5.15.17. It then fails with:

I did some search and this fails because in the mean time 5.15.17 is not in "official_releases" anymore but in "archive" as there are now more recent versions. It is in https://download.qt.io/archive/qt/5.15/ ... .17.tar.xz.

Thing is I want to complete the rebuild with the right USE flags before doing an update. y experience is that if you update incomplete @world sets you just end up with more issues. Is there a way to tell portage to look at that url I found or is there a way to download it myself and tell portage to use that download?

Sometimes, official repositories move or delete old files, it looks like that's what's happened here.

The files should still be on Gentoo's distfile mirrors. Visit the distfile mirror section of the handbook, and set up a mirror. It says it's optional, personally I don't think it should be.

You already seem to know the new download location, just put it in your distfiles directory.

Ok, first I tried to add about 10 mirrors close to me to the make.conf as b11n suggested. This still gave "could not download".

Next I downloaded the file myself and copied it into /var/cache/distfiles/ as asturm suggested. After the emerge -uvUD @world I have in /var/cache/distfiles this:

If the checksum changed as well, then your only chance is some other mirror, or a local overlay and re-manifesting.

At some point, it may be easier to sync before finishing the updates than to keep fighting. You're already one release behind on qtcore, so you will get to build qt again (for 5.5.18) post-sync. Fighting to get 5.5.17 to build now may not be worth it.

It might indeed be the better option. I'm just a bit in doubt what would be the fastest: updating and likely several issues or just starting all over again. Oh well it will have to wait for the weekend. Thanks for all the ideas!

PS: Still don't understand why that checksum should have changed. First I though there had been a Gentoo specific patch but that can't be because portage tries to download it from the qt repository in the first place.

If the checksum of the file you put in $DISTDIR is not acceptable to Portage, then you found the wrong file. Perhaps upstream revised their file, but Gentoo never picked up the checksum change because Gentoo had already moved on to 5.5.18 by that time. Perhaps upstream revised the file, Gentoo picked up the checksum change, and that change would be visible if you had synced more recently. Perhaps upstream revised the file, Gentoo picked up the change, and you found an old copy of the file, from before Gentoo picked up the change. Perhaps the file you found is just wrong, and Gentoo has never accepted the found file as valid for this package.
