Intel Tigerlake (Iris Xe) artifacts and memory corruptions

Hello, I've been trying, for several weeks now, to fix crippling problems that seemed to start sometime after a long overdue mesa update, with Tigerlake / Iris Xe (8086:9a49, Thinkpad Carbon X1 9th Gen), to no avail.

They occur with mpv under wayland (wlroots/sway); not with the software-renderer and not on console with DRM. They do not seem to occur with playback in firefox.

At first the problems involved panics and hard freezes. I received help from tdr on ##gentoo who gave me a better kernel config, pointing out that power management was off to the effect that the chip was underpowered, which led to freezes. That helped to reduce the freezes significantly.

The current symptoms involve randomly missing subtitle lines (sic), and as memory seemingly degrades, further disappearing OSD elements, artifacts in the OSD. Further down the road glitches in other software and if I keep playing, eventually things will fall apart at all ends to the point where the entire system freezes irrecoverably.

I ran several, including full, memory checks (Lenovo Diagnostics), checked dmesg.

There is nothing.

I'll appreciate any suggestions, as I'm frankly out of ideas.

What kernel(s) (type and version) have you tried that were "good" vs "bad" recent?
Have you tried downgrading your Mesa back to the prior non-affected version(s)?
How is your firefox set to render?

Run a shell window on the side with `dmesg -w` so you can keep track of kernel ring events. If you're getting tainted kernel panics, especially involving a particular driver addition, such as your GPU, e.g., you should expect to possibly have further problems during that session. Recovery from such events to keep running, when you do, is a best effort only.

Try and eliminate any panics from occurring with any regularity, especially if you're able to reproduce. Make sure you don't have actual failing hardware going on.

Suggest also considering playing around with another live distro ISO, both in wayland/X flavor variants with stable DE environments to test on reproducing the problems. If they function fine, then it's back to configuration issues aforementioned, especially if you were in a known good state at any time.
(I don't speak for/represent my current/past employers)

Have you enabled CONFIG_DRM_XE in your kernel configuration? If yes, try to disable it and use only CONFIG_DRM_I915.
