Sound : No input devices in gnome [solved]

  • Quote

Post by Goltia » Mon Dec 22, 2025 6:58 am

Hi,

My microphone doesn't seem to be detected on my laptop.

In Gnome Sound settings, it says No input devices.

Output is working well.

Code: Select all

$ lspci | grep -i audio
00:1f.3 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation Raptor Lake-P/U/H cAVS (rev 01)

Code: Select all

$ lspci -s 00:1f.3 -nnk
00:1f.3 Multimedia audio controller [0401]: Intel Corporation Raptor Lake-P/U/H cAVS [8086:51ca] (rev 01)
	Subsystem: Dell Device [1028:0beb]
	Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel
	Kernel modules: snd_hda_intel, snd_soc_avs, snd_sof_pci_intel_tgl

Code: Select all

$ arecord -l
**** List of CAPTURE Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC289 Analog [ALC289 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 2: ALC289 Alt Analog [ALC289 Alt Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
My kernel .config : https://pastebin.com/dkvSQLcq

systemctl list-units : https://pastebin.com/zdiWBrBu

By the way, if I plug an usb mic, it works fine.

At this point, I don't know if it's an issue with my kernel or a configuration somewhere...

Any help is appreciated.

Does it work on another OS or from a liveUSB? If so, you could run lsmod on the liveUSB to see what module/driver it uses.

It is possible that your mic uses a specific driver that you haven't enabled.

Please share with us the output of lsusb as well. "Embedded" devices like BT, wifi or webcams are usually connected internally via a USB interface.

Thanks for your answer, I was starting to feel lonely :)

I didn't try with another OS. I will try with an ubuntu live USB to see if it works.

Here is my lsusb :

System detects the audio device, but Gnome doesn't.
I wonder if there's failure to start pipewire. Do you get any audio to work?
Is there anything in gnome's logs about this?

Interesting. Your integrated mic doesn't seem to be listed there. Maybe lspci could list something relevant? You can always check compatibility on linux-hardware.org. It even points what kernel driver/option you should enable.

I had that on Meteor Lake. Sound playback worked, but mic, though detected, did not. I installed distribution kernel (-bin) and microphone worked. I then trimmed distribution kernel config to my liking, and microphone still worked. So at the end I was not able to find that critical CONFIG option that killed it on the first try.

I found the one !

It was SND_SOC_SOF_ALDERLAKE.

I first enabled everything under :

Code: Select all

 -> Device Drivers
       -> Sound card support (SOUND [=y])
         -> Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (SND [=y])
           -> ALSA for SoC audio support (SND_SOC [=m])
             -> Sound Open Firmware Support (SND_SOC_SOF_TOPLEVEL [=y])
               -> SOF support for Intel audio DSPs (SND_SOC_SOF_INTEL_TOPLEVEL [=y])
Then start disabling/enabling some. After a few tries and reboots, SND_SOC_SOF_ALDERLAKE makes it work.

Thanks for the help

Ah, sure, that is needed

BTW, on SOC-SOF system you usually can disable snd_hda_intel (that is PCI sound driver). If you look at dmesg, what it does, if present, it detects digital microphone and passes reigns to SOC drivers
