app-office/scribus-1.6.x removed

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

app-office/scribus-1.6.x removed

Why was Scribus <1.7 removed? Scribus 1.6.4 worked beautifully, but now the only version is 1.7.x which is still a pre-release version.

How can it be that a stable version is removed before the next stable version becomes available?

I need it to do professional work, and all I have now is a buggy pre-release version. That is very irritating!

Until now, I always could count on Gentoo.

We try to avoid doing that but occasionally do when upstream are very slow to release new versions and we have to backport huge amounts to the old version.

You are free to do two things:
1) Putting a copy of the old ebuild in a local repository, see https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Downgradin ... ed_version
2) File a bug politely explaining your need to use 1.6.x and what problems you've had with 1.7.x.

Ultimately reasons are they are late to port to Qt6 (once again, as with Qt4 -> Qt5), and their reliance on unstable dependency ABI broken on a monthly basis, while they only manage approximately 1 release per year, which is causing a lot of upkeep on strained maintainer resources. Even if you brought 1.6.4 back right now, the fact that it is a release from last April means it would fail to build without backporting several changes from their SVN repository, with a high chance it will break again in January.

Thank you both for your answers. I understand now why this happened.

I hope the good folks at Scribus will soon fix the bugs currently bugging me. Forgive the pun.

If you have the resources to track those bugs upstream, if they are already known, and even better, file new bugs yourself with as much good information as possible, that would surely help get 1.7 branch in shape for a timely upstream release, and I would be happy to spin new snapshots as these bugs are reported as fixed.

1.7.1 has just been released, and I hope it works well enough for your purpose.
