Trouble contributing to guru

  • Quote

Post by Luke Gompertz » Fri Dec 19, 2025 10:25 am

Hi all. I've written an ebuild for noctalia (a quickshell configuration) and was convinced by some gentooers to contribute it to guru. The ebuild is now passing pkgcheck with no issues so I'm hoping to publish it.

I've followed all the steps here: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:GU ... Committing

including filing an access request which has been granted: https://bugs.gentoo.org/967698

Unfortunately, at the very last step (push to remote) I'm getting an error:

Code: Select all

$ git pull --rebase && pkgdev push -A
Current branch dev is up to date.
Error: invalid repo: nonexistent masters: gentoo
error: failed to push some refs to 'git.gentoo.org:repo/proj/guru.git'
I'm unsure what the error message is referring to. Does anyone know what I should do to resolve it?

Thanks!

Hi,

Please post your emerge --info.
Do you have a up-to-date portage tree on this system ?

Thanks for the reply. I'm somewhat surprised by this line of questioning. As per the linked guide I started by performing a

Code: Select all

git clone -b dev git@git.gentoo.org:repo/proj/guru.git
which I did in a (non-root) user folder. I didn't expect that the general state of the system would be involved.

Regardless prompted by this I synced and updated my system and the error message is the same. Here is emerge --info as requested:

Code: Select all

I guessing based on this that the clone needs to be performed in a specific location? (Or that I should be using the existing guru repo at /var/db/repos/guru?)

Please share the content of /etc/portage/repos.conf.

From this comment :
pkgcore support for portage config parsing is compatible with basic settings from repos.conf, but won't go searching for it in /usr/share/portage.

I'd advise using /etc/portage/repos.conf or submitting a convincing argument as to why pkgcore should go searching for it in other portage-centric locations.
If your gentoo repository is not defined in /etc/portage/repos.conf, but in /usr/share/portage/config/repos.conf, then you must follow this :
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Pkgcheck#e ... or_invalid

Thanks again. I have the gentoo repo defined here:
/etc/portage/repos.conf/gentoo.conf

Code: Select all

[DEFAULT]
main-repo = gentoo

[gentoo]
location = /var/db/repos/gentoo
sync-type = rsync
sync-uri = rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage
auto-sync = yes
sync-rsync-verify-jobs = 1
sync-rsync-verify-metamanifest = yes
sync-rsync-verify-max-age = 3
sync-openpgp-key-path = /usr/share/openpgp-keys/gentoo-release.asc
sync-openpgp-keyserver = hkps://keys.gentoo.org
sync-openpgp-key-refresh-retry-count = 40
sync-openpgp-key-refresh-retry-overall-timeout = 1200
sync-openpgp-key-refresh-retry-delay-exp-base = 2
sync-openpgp-key-refresh-retry-delay-max = 60
sync-openpgp-key-refresh-retry-delay-mult = 4
sync-webrsync-verify-signature = yes
The same folder also contains `eselect-repo.conf`:

Code: Select all

# created by eselect-repo

[guru]
location = /var/db/repos/guru
sync-type = git
sync-uri = https://github.com/gentoo-mirror/guru.git

[local]
location = /var/db/repos/local

[steam-overlay]
location = /var/db/repos/steam-overlay
sync-type = git
sync-uri = https://github.com/anyc/steam-overlay.git
It's also worth mentioning since you linked the pkgcheck page that I ran pkgcheck scan against my ebuild and it worked just fine.

Then sorry, I don't know. Do you have some more output if you add the --debug option to the pkgdev command ?

Doesn't appear to be very enlightening:

This error popups from pkgcore. You should open an issue. Maybe someone could help you.

For anyone stumbling upon this in the future. The issue was narrowed down the the `pkgcruft` hook. Still unsure what was wrong with the `pkgcruft` config (possibly the package has a bug, even). I have worked around this for now by removing the git hook and running `pkgcheck scan --commits` manually.
