kde-plasma updated but qt did not update - why ? [SOLVED]

Hello -

I have access to two very similar machines machines running gentoo. Recently kde-plasma was updated to 6.5.4
kde-plasma emerged successfully on both machines; however, on one machine qt updated to 6.10.1 while on the other one it stayed
at 6.9.3. I ran emerge --depclean and tried all the suggestions in https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Qt/FAQ to no avail.
For the life of me I cannot figure out what could be blocking the qt update. Any suggestions ?

Thanks. I am surprised that you followed all the steps listed on https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Qt/FAQ[b][/b].

There are several problems here:

app-portage/g-octave only supports up to Python 3.12, see bug 952239. I've fixed that now as it's trivial but a local workaround would've worked if PYTHON_TARGETS was set appropriately to handle that.
gnome-extra/nautilus-dropbox suffers from a similar problem, see bug 952503. I've added py3.13+py3.14 there semi-blindly now, but see above.
sci-mathematics/mathematica in a local repository of yours is holding onto old ffmpeg. Given it's a prebuilt package, you likely need to switch it to using media-video/ffmpeg-compat. Note that this needs ffmpeg-compat.eclass too. See some examples of this in ::gentoo. The ebuild in ::gentoo should probably be updated to do this or have some comment about it for future use given all old mathematica versions will eventually need something like this. I filed bug 967341 for this.

It is likely more would be revealed by emerge -pev @world --backtrack=0 mentioned in the FAQ. Please run that and share its output.

I see a large list of issues there indeed. You can ignore the Python ones for a moment for the reasons I listed in my earlier post. But you do need to make the package.use changes that aren't related to Python in the output.

You can then emerge --sync and show the new output of that -pev command.

The reason is that if any package Qt depends on, or that depends on Qt with :=, cannot be rebuilt, then it jams everything else up. Also, Portage has a limited number of cycles it will spend on trying to work around that (even with large --backtrack=, it gives up eventually before that for some cases).

Did you change your mathematica ebuild? You will need to do that, or set -ffmpeg in package.use for it. Also, USE=compositor was removed from qtwayland, so you will need to change the mathematica ebuild for that too. Change it to compositor(+) in the ebuild.

Once that is sorted, please share the output of: grep -rsin python /etc/portage. Some stale entries will need to be cleaned up, I think.

Thanks at lot !!! It looks like mathematica was the culprit ! I changed compositor to compositor(+) and disabled ffmpeg in package.use and now qt is getting updated.
I still need to cleanup the python mess ... this may have to wait until tomorrow.

qt update to 6.10.1 was almost successful. I manually updated the few libraries
for which an update was, for some reason not triggered. I could then proceed
to remove all references to python3_12. After

everything is clean - no message from emerge !
In the hope this may be useful to someone in the future ... I learned that
when there is a dependency like

qtwayland[compositor]

in a ebuild, if for some reason this flag is removed in a new version
of qtwayland, portage will try to emerge the latest version available for which the
compositor flag is actually defined; hence the importance of

qtwayland[compositor(+)]

The + sign means: if the flag exists, it must be enabled. If the flag does not exist, assume it is enabled and continue.

I just did emerge -C kde-apps-meta, then upgraded plasma, and then reinstalled kde-apps-meta with new qt 6.10.1.

I had a strange block on qtbase or other qt library that wanted to stay on 6.9.3 because it was a dependency.

Portage was stuck on something else. What you did is a workaround and doesn't fix the real problem.
