[SOLVED] Xorg and nvidia 5080 on new Gentoo

  • Quote

Post by ChemMir » Mon Dec 08, 2025 9:28 pm

Hello,
One year ago I managed to install Gentoo on my laptop, but now I'm stuck on Xorg during a new installation (from scratch) on a Ryzen 9950X3D with nvidia 5080 card.
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
I would like to use nvidia-drivers and not the nouveau.
Here is my emerge --info:

The kernel was compiled starting from gentoo-kernel (dist), in the hope it might simplify the upgrade, but I think I'd prefer to use to the old method with 'make && make modules_install', 'make install', dracut and eventually rebuild 'emerge nvidia-drivers'. So I installed gentoo-sources and symlink to it.
I cannot understand were is the problem and why nvidia is not lloaded. It should be on the correct place:

One thing I see is that VIDEO_CARDS is missing from your "emerge --info", it should be set to "nvidia" in /etc/portage/make.conf (or as per the Gentoo wiki entry on nvidia-drivers)

Thank you for the message. VIDEO_CARDS has been set to nvidia (should I add also amdgpu? In the notebook I did not):

Code: Select all

Ryzen3D ~ # cat /etc/portage/make.conf
# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically

I really cannot understand, I'm wondering if other people that have the CPU Ryzen 9 9950X3D have this problem. IMHO it should be a software problem

ChemMir,

From your log, Xorg is auto detecting video drivers

Code: Select all

[    83.632] (==) Matched ati as autoconfigured driver 0
[    83.632] (==) Matched nouveau as autoconfigured driver 1
[    83.632] (==) Matched nv as autoconfigured driver 2
[    83.632] (==) Matched modesetting as autoconfigured driver 3
[    83.632] (==) Matched fbdev as autoconfigured driver 4
[    83.632] (==) Matched vesa as autoconfigured driver 5
However, the auto detect does not include binary blob drivers

You need an xorg.conf.d/nvidia.conf fragment to tell Xorg to load the nvidia driver.
Its covered on the Wiki
You may want to read that whole page as there are other traps too.
Regards,

NeddySeagoon

Computer users fall into two groups:-
those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail.

NeddySeagoon,
thank you for your message. I was following the link you posted, but apparently not fully.
I recompiled the kernel with minor changes (https://nopaste.net/Lc9UWPQZKy), but I think this is not the reason for the improvement below.
Adding the 'kernel-open' keyword to /etc/portage/package.use/00video imroved the situation:

Code: Select all

*/* VIDEO_CARDS: -* nvidia
x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers kernel-open
This is new to me. Apparently with 5080 cards we need to use the kernel-open keyword.
However, I still have some problems. X.0.log:

Code: Select all

ChemMir,

That's progress.
Xorg started, found nothing to do, so it exited cleanly.

This is expected if you run startx, since the default .xinitrc programs are not installed by default.
For startx to work with the defaults,

Code: Select all

emerge twm xterm xclock
Alternatively, install a display manager and configure the service.
You could also write a ~/.xinitrc file to start whatever you want.

I don't think Xorg is happy yet. It tried to bind to a socket and got permission denied by it does not look like a fatal error.
Regards,

Here's a thread (arch linux) that pretty much addresses the WW (warnings)

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=256372

from link in case you don't want to go there
For clarification, the sideband socket file is used to "to pass information to other driver components. If unable to connect to this socket, some driver features, such as G-Sync, may not work correctly."

Hi guys!
I'd like to thank you for the advice. I managed to start X + nvidia and almost all is running now. Some details to solve yet, but with time I'm going to finalize.
I forgot to add a few emerge:

Code: Select all

emerge dbus
rc-update add dbus default
emerge kde-apps-meta
emerge --ask sys-power/acpid
rc-update add acpid default
and especially the .xinitrc:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash
exec dbus-launch --exit-with-session startplasma-x11
Thank you!
