SDDM fails first login attempt

I have sddm to start on boot (openRC). sddm successfully starts, but when I try to log in, nothing happens. The controls/widgets fade, just as they do on a normal log in. Then nothing. No action, Plasma doesn't start. It just sits there.

Nothing unusual in the logs. Just the usual information about PAM, drivers. No errors.

If I switch to a VT and stop then start sddm using rc-service, sddm just hard crashes at a black screen (forced to reboot).

If I switch to a VT, and issue

rc-service sddm restart

sddm will restart, and now I am able to log in. Once I enter my password and hit enter, the Plasma splash screen shows and things go about as normal.

If I log out, it's the same. Try to log in and it hangs, restart and I can log in successfully.

I don't have this problem on any other distro, so it's obvious I'm configured something wrong, but being the second attempt works, I am completely at a loss.
