Xorg problem - not Gentoo related - what might be happening?

This forum covers all Gentoo-related software not officially supported by Gentoo. Ebuilds/software posted here might harm the health and stability of your system(s), and are not supported by Gentoo developers. Bugs/errors caused by ebuilds from overlays.gentoo.org are covered by this forum, too.

Xorg problem - not Gentoo related - what might be happening?

Greetings. Looking for some analysis from people who know more than me.

I think the problem is the video hardware. But what do I know? Not much. I wanted to run this past some people smarter than me about computers and X.

This device is from 2014, it's got on-board video. It boots, but when X attempts to start there is a white screen of death and it goes into a loop of attempting to start X.

The white screen of death is on the main monitor. I know it's attempting to start X as I can attach a second monitor and that one is showing me what's going on, thus I know the OS is booting up, and it's attempting to start X.

Not Gentoo at all, so I appreciate any analysis of this.

And I don't really know if I can do any sort of updates to the software - it boots the system then automatically starts the software. Because you will wonder, this is for a MQ100 Lighting Console.

Thanks much!

That's a segmentation fault in the X server, but why is the video driver loaded from /usr/local/lib, when everything else is being loaded from /usr/lib?

Can you post your xorg.conf?

I would have no idea.

I went looking for xorg.conf and couldn't find one.
I will look again next time I'm working on this. Maybe I was in the wrong place, or blind.
Will post what I come up with.
Thanks.

Gentoo Portage never installs things into /usr/local, so anything in there was not installed by the Gentoo Portage tree. You probably need to ask your local system administrator what was put in there. ;) What is the output of find /usr/local/include /usr/local/lib -ls?

Got back into the file system.

The video drivers/modules are in /usr/local/lib/xorg/modules/drivers.

Found the xorg.conf. It's not where I expected it to be. Kind of makes sense as it's generated by the software that runs the console and changes based on how many & what resolution screens are attached.

Meanwhile, I'm now mostly sure it's hardware not file system. I put this drive into another console and it booted up normally. I'm thinking more than ever the on-board video of the motherboard has taken a dump.

It's Debian. Nothing was installed by portage.

There are no administrators. The company that made this no longer supports it. No who works there even knows the root password.

I'm on my own here stumbling around in the dark.

Sorry. You said at the top it was not Gentoo, but then the first response flagged the use of /usr/local/lib, which is commonly seen on Gentoo when someone bypasses Portage and installs software by hand. I noted that post and built on it, forgetting that you had already said it was not Gentoo.

Code: Select all

# This config file has been written by the MagicQ software and will be overwritten if this file is changed
# To alter the settings, use SETUP > VIEW SYSTEM > VIEW MONITORS
Meanwhile, I'm now mostly sure it's hardware not file system. I put this drive into another console and it booted up normally. I'm thinking more than ever the on-board video of the motherboard has taken a dump.
Could you move the drive to the another console along with a second monitor, then use the "SETUP > VIEW SYSTEM > VIEW MONITORS" to make it display on the second monitor instead of the first, with a view to switching it back?

Just as a personal aside, I wouldn't feel happy about writing off the PC hardware without putting it into a situation with "known good cabling and peripherals" and watching it fail there, but I know how delicate these legacy situations can be...

I believe the log states where configuration files are being read from, and if they're being used:

Code: Select all

[...]
[    10.330] Markers: (--) probed, (**) from config file, (==) default setting,
	(++) from command line, (!!) notice, (II) informational,
	(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
[    10.331] (==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Wed Apr  9 21:28:56 2008
[    10.332] (==) Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"
[    10.333] (==) ServerLayout "Main Layout"

[    10.333] (**) |   |-->Monitor "LVDS"
[    10.334] (**) |   |-->Device "Card00"

Interesting(?) date there too for the log. :]
Kindest of regardses.

Sorry. You said at the top it was not Gentoo, but then the first response flagged the use of /usr/local/lib, which is commonly seen on Gentoo when someone bypasses Portage and installs software by hand. I noted that post and built on it, forgetting that you had already said it was not Gentoo.
No worries. At this point any questions help me think this through. Thank you for taking the time to read and respond.

Hello and thank you for the input. I've been chasing other problems for a while, now back to this.

You make many good points. Here are further details - as much for myself as I'm thinking this over.

I actually have three of these consoles that all have exactly the same problem. I've been swapping parts, checking voltages, messing with cables.

I do have two working consoles - from which I could pull a motherboard for testing. However, if anything happens to one of those consoles I am screwed. Badly. Thus I hesitate to do such a thing.

The consoles have a built in screen and allow me to attach an external screen. When I power it up the build in screen lights up all white. An external screen will show Linux booting up and then throw me error messages about the inability of X to start on the internal screen.

My first though was of course that the internal screen is broken. So I replaced it with a used but working screen. Same thing. Then I replaced it with a new screen. Same result. And tried different cables.

What ever has gone wrong has gone wrong on three different consoles - which makes it all the more baffling.

I checked Ebay for this motherboard and wasn't able to find any. I can get the internal screen on Ebay. Thus I'm somewhat questing for a motherboard.

Anyone know any websites I might be likely to find a board from 2012 on? There's gotta be a pile of these in some storeroom someplace. *ha*

I have also been swapping hard drives. Maybe there is something wrong on those. I do have image files for the original factory filesystem. At this point I'm going to have to re-image one of the drives and test that just to eliminate that. I doubt I could be so fortunate that the problem is the filesystem because that I can fix. That's on my agenda to do next.

Your suggestion about swapping monitors was good. Here is the deal on that.

When this thing boots it goes into Linux, starts X, then starts the software which makes the console do what the console does. That software is called MagicQ.

The "SETUP > VIEW SYSTEM > VIEW MONITORS" is something you access in the MagicQ software. The error starting X means I can't get to that software to make this change.

EDIT: I just read you message again and see I missed what you were saying. Could I change the xorg.conf on a different console then move the drive back.... hmm... There is no option in the software to disable the internal/main screen. And I don't think it's possible to make the primary screen anything other than the internal screen. But that's an interesting idea. I'm going to have to look into this.

But... Maybe I can manually configure the xorg.conf. Of course it says in the file

Code: Select all

# This config file has been written by the MagicQ software and will be overwritten if this file is changed
# To alter the settings, use SETUP > VIEW SYSTEM > VIEW MONITORS
But... If MagicQ isn't starting... Then it can't overwrite the file.

Maybe I can write protect the file somehow? I'm spitballing here.

I went into the BIOS with the idea that I could disable the video output that is giving me problems and make the VGA the primary video output. But I could find no option to make that happen. I'm going to have a second look in case I missed it.

Another problem with my "video board" on the motherboard is dead idea is this - wouldn't I lose all video output? Sure at some place the video outputs must diverge, but I'd think they would all have the same source.

At this very moment I have installed a different hard drive and am installing Linux Mint. The CPU is working fine. It's just the primary video output that is kaput. Anyhow, what I'm testing here is this - If I can get Mint to work, I can install MagicQ in Mint. Then, the console might work. I don't know this for a fact. But at this point I've got three of these things to experiment with.

So there is my brain dump. If y'all have any ideas, comments, suggestions, so forth I'll take 'em.

I'm nearing the point where I do so much that I'm going to need to reset my brain and start all over at step one.

Thanks for reading my personal problems. :D
