app-office/libreoffice: OpenSSL disabled? Initial purpose?

This forum covers all Gentoo-related software not officially supported by Gentoo. Ebuilds/software posted here might harm the health and stability of your system(s), and are not supported by Gentoo developers. Bugs/errors caused by ebuilds from overlays.gentoo.org are covered by this forum, too.

It may be a warning that has been existing here for a long time already.
ebuild log snippets:

Code: Select all

...
checking which TLS/SSL and cryptographic implementation to use... NSS
configure: WARNING: OpenSSL has been disabled. No code compiled here will make use of it but system libraries may create indirect dependencies
checking whether to enable the OpenSSL backend for rtl/cipher.h... no
...
HOST config (config.warn)
*************************************
* WARNING : OpenSSL has been disabled. No code compiled here will make use of it but system libraries may create indirect dependencies
>>> Source configured.
2 my understanding no related USE flag here :roll:

Could I be missing something?

(Working build though)

Thks 4 ur attention, interest & support.

CaptainBlood,

The ebuild says

Code: Select all

        dev-libs/nss
        >=dev-libs/redland-1.0.16
        >=dev-libs/xmlsec-1.2.35:=[nss]
...
--disable-openssl
--with-tls=nss
I'm sure it used to be a USE flay but its hard coded now.
Regards,

NeddySeagoon

As I read the gentoo.git history, this was changed by asturm in 2018 in app-office/libreoffice: Make sure NSS is used for TLS, disable OpenSSL, so yes, this warning has been there for a long time.

As far as feature set is concerned could be related to electronic signing of PDF as described in Ubunru.

Any thought in this respect?

I cannot tell from the git commit that I found above what functionality is handled by use or absence of OpenSSL. Does signing work for you in the Gentoo build of libreoffice, despite OpenSSL having been disabled for years? If no, what error is reported?

File/Digital Signatures menu pop up a menu where 'Sign Document...' button pops up another menu with list of user existing GPG/GnuPG, or NSS Certificate DB in /home/user/.mozilla/firefox/*. Selecting displayed GPG/GnuPG item seems to fail to apply, refreshing the latter displayed pop-up instead.

I may be doing it wrong; never signed a document before.
