Thunderbird classic view

I just upgraded to Thunderbird version 136 because my calendar no longer worked under OWL in 128.

Now the calendar works, BUT the User interface is unusable. They have worked very hard to include lots of gratuitous vertical padding and wasted space to give it a more "modern" look.

The old thunderbird is still in there, but it's (deliberately?) buried behind MS Outlook, which they clearly want to emulate. If I was Ok with outlook, would I be using thunderbird?

Here's my list of settings to get the old UI back:
1) get the (hidden by default) menu bar back: Go to the "Hamburger" (three bars in the upper right of the title bar) ->View -> Toolbars -> Menu Bar
2) Get the (hidden by default) classic folder layout back: View -> Layout -> Classic View
3) Enable the (hidden by default) Message list header: View -> Layout -> Message List Header # (necessary in order to expose more view options)
4) Restore compact line spacing (set to double space by default): View -> Density -> Compact
5) Restore old "Table View" (card view is now default): <icon to right of "Quick filter") -> Table View

If you do all of that, you have everything nearly back the way it was.
Cheers,
Jon.

This happens to me a lot. I have the same problem *again* and when I google it I find my own old post. Only just two months ago.

For the record:

Every so often an upgrade of Thunderbirs defaults you back to the outlook-clone UI. Don't panic.

What's new:

The "Hamburger icon" now looks like a ladder in the upper right of the message list pane. If you don't see it you need to enable the message list header. When you do that the lladder appears and you can click "Table View".

The Mozilla foundation are convinced that the "Card View" message list format that Outlook uses is what modern users want and need, so they default the UI to it (I've seen the blog posts about this). I would like to give them money on the condition that they tell the developers of card view that card view is a load of <bad word>.

If you get more than four emails a day you need to cram absolutely as many of them as you can into the list.

But see below, nothing else has changed. Just the hamburger icon is now a ladder. Who said visual language is intuitive. Why can't they have a menu item for it? But they are trying to get rid of the menu bar too.

Cheers,
Jon.
