[SOLVED] Remove vmware-workstation from 'emerge @world'

This forum covers all Gentoo-related software not officially supported by Gentoo. Ebuilds/software posted here might harm the health and stability of your system(s), and are not supported by Gentoo developers. Bugs/errors caused by ebuilds from overlays.gentoo.org are covered by this forum, too.

[SOLVED] Remove vmware-workstation from 'emerge @world'

Code: Select all

$ qlist -Iv vmware-workstation
app-emulation/vmware-workstation-17.6.3.24583834-r2
This was installed using the stefantalpalaru overlay. Since it no longer provides vmware-workstation, I've deleted it and replaced it with pf4public, which does. Each time I emerge world portage attempts to install that same version from pf4public.

Can I configure portage (not simply emerge -X) to skip that version and just emerge newer versions from pf4public?

[SOLVED] Thanks, fedeliallalinea and rfx, for suggestions. I opted to change my emerge script to emerge -X app-emulation/vwmare-workstation. This will ensure VMWare Workstation functions through the end of my project. Then I'll alter it back, omitting the -X app-emulation/vmware-workstation. [/SOLVED]

You can try with

Code: Select all

# emerge --deselect app-emulation/vmware-workstation
# emerge --noreplace app-emulation/vmware-workstation::pf4public
Each time I emerge world portage attempts to install that same version from pf4public.
This is strange if it no longer exists in the overlay of stefantalpalaru.

Thanks. This requires reinstalling from pf4public. I was hoping to do this without a reinstall as I'm using the host Windows 10 for some work that is important. Once I have that done, I'll quickpkg the stefantalpalaru version and emerge the new pf4public version.

Now it seems clearer to me, you have 2 repositories for the same package and same version.
I think to force installation from another overlay just give emerge -1 vmware-workstation::pf4public or increase the priority of the pf4public overlay (not sure if it works).

Code: Select all

emerge -avuDU --exclude=app-emulation/vmware-workstation @world
Maybe this is how you want it to run?
