ungoogled-chromium-bin media-libs/flac compat issue [SOLVED]

This forum covers all Gentoo-related software not officially supported by Gentoo. Ebuilds/software posted here might harm the health and stability of your system(s), and are not supported by Gentoo developers. Bugs/errors caused by ebuilds from overlays.gentoo.org are covered by this forum, too.

ungoogled-chromium-bin media-libs/flac compat issue [SOLVED]

I'm running stable amd64. Yesterday's updates (4/27), updated www-client/ungoogled-chromium-bin (from pf4public overlay) to version 135.0.7049.114, and media-libs/flac to version 1.5.0. Afterwards, ungoogled-chromium-bin would not run with the error:

Code: Select all

$ chromium-browser-bin
chromium-browser: error while loading shared libraries: libFLAC.so.12: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I considered masking media-libs/flac-1.5.0 back to 1.4.3, but that would have involved recompiling a dozen additional programs so instead I added a symlink in /usr/lib64 as follows:

Code: Select all

ln -s libFLAC.so.14 libFLAC.so.12
It's been a LONG time since I've had to attempt such a clunky work around. It works, and ungoogled-chromium still plays sounds.

I also had to edit the new .desktop file (adding paths) so the updated ungoogled-chromium-bin symlinks in /usr/bin could be found as well as its icon path so it would show up in the menu.

I like, and sometimes need the ungoogled-chromium-bin and am thankful for the packager's efforts, but this was a most clunky update. Hopefully, these notes will help another user.

Maybe report issue upstream, the maintainer can force media-libs/flac to media-libs/flac:0/10-12.

hrm... I was thinking of media-libs/flac-compat, but that only offers libFLAC.so.8.3.0 at the moment

Indeed, sorry, I'd forgot to do that. Will look at it now.

For the record, media-libs/flac-compat:12.1.0 exists now and provides libFLAC.so.12. So if an ebuild for a prebuilt needs it, it should be updated to depend on that or both with || ( media-libs/flac-compat:12.1.0 media-libs/flac:0/10-12 ) as a proper fix (not that much value in doing both at this point though, given the newer one is stable).

This morning after my local repositories were updated, I installed media-libs/flac-compat-1.4.3~ (12.1.0) and it nicely does the job expected. It even cleanly overwrote the work-around symlink I had created. Marking this thread solved. Thank you all who pitched in.
