(Solved) No sound through internal speakers on Steam Deck

Post by Kaidezee » Sat Jan 04, 2025 12:47 pm

I installed Gentoo on Steam Deck and can't quite figure out how to get ALSA working.
I run gentoo-sources 6.12.8 with this configuration https://dpaste.com/FQB9EMMV7.
What could cause this behavior?
There is an interesting line in dmesg that seems related:

Code: Select all

# dmesg | grep -i 'acp5x'
[    3.907437] snd_pci_acp5x 0000:04:00.5: enabling device (0000 -> 0002)
[ 14.657169] platform acp5x_mach.0: deferred probe pending: acp5x_mach: Register card (acp5x) failed
Full dmesg: (don't ask why I connected and disconnected my keyboard a bunch of times) https://dpaste.com/BXMB3PL6Y
Also lspci:

Code: Select all

# lspci -k

I forgot to add my aplay -L, so here it is.

Code: Select all

# aplay -L
null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
hdmi:CARD=Generic,DEV=0
    HD-Audio Generic, Generic Digital
    HDMI Audio Output

I have no experience with a SteamDeck ... but let me try ...

We had some machines where this was important for sound:

Code: Select all

# CONFIG_SERIAL_MULTI_INSTANTIATE is not set
( https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/User:Pieti ... nstantiate )

The next I have seen is this:

Code: Select all

# CONFIG_IOMMU_SUPPORT is not set
Does a SteamDeck has no support for this? You could do: Boot with our GentooCD and check with "cpuid | grep x2APIC" if you have: x2APIC: extended xAPIC support = true
If yes, THEN do this: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/User:Pieti ... rnel#IOMMU
(you need "Support for Interrupt Remapping" to get x2apic)
Now enable this option: [*] Support x2apic
-> https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/User:Pieti ... d_features
and then you don't need: [ ] Enable MPS table

Pietinger,

Thank you for reply.

( https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/User:Pieti ... nstantiate )
I enabled this option, but nothing seems to have changed.
Does a SteamDeck has no support for this? You could do: Boot with our GentooCD and check with "cpuid | grep x2APIC" if you have: x2APIC: extended xAPIC support = true
Just ran this command, it stated that "x2APIC: extended xAPIC support = false" multiple times.

Does the sound work if you boot with an UbuntuLiveCD?

If yes, please do a "lsmod" and a "lspci -nnk" and a dmesg; then compare it with your kernel settings (I can see from your settings that you have a lot of experience with kernel configuration) - or provide all 3 files (please use wgetpaste for this).

If no, then ... I think it will not work with Gentoo also. :(

Pietinger,

Sound does work on Ubuntu.
I did what you asked. lspcis look the same, and I don't really know what to make out of dmesgs...
Could you maybe try please?
lspci, dmesg, lsmod
As for wgetpaste, I couldn't find it in Ubuntu repos :(

Also, here are the same commands but executed on my Gentoo.
lspci, dmesg, lsmod

@mega_flow

your contribution is extremely helpful ... if it already works for you then it should be transferable.

Kaidezee

I quickly saw that this is missing for you (possibly more is missing):

Code: Select all

# CONFIG_SND_HDA_RECONFIG is not set
# CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_HDMI is not set

Quick update; I found a setting to enable IOMMU support in UEFI.

Hmmm ... you said you have booted with Ubuntu and there it works ... with the same (old == no iommu) UEFI setting ? ... If yes, then it would be nice to have it, but I don't think it is the reason.

That's what I think, too.

Also I noticed that at boot kernel says something like "snd_hda_intel: cannot probe for codecs". Not sure if this is relevant.

If we don't find the missing option you could - as last ressort - this:
viewtopic-p-8850302.html#8850302
(maybe it is safer to do a "make distclean" before the "make localyesconfig"; of course you should backup your .config before; after building this new config you can compare it with your "old" config)

I simply used gentoo-kernel-bin package and everything works now (Yes, I'm lazy). Marking this as solved.

On the one hand, I'm pleased, but on the other hand, it is of course unsatisfactory not to know what the problem was.

... yes, me too ...

If you want to investigate the problem further at some point, I would like to give you the following tips:

1. with sound it is crucial that everything is either integrated as a module or statically (e.g. codecs as a module and snd-hda statically is NOT good).

2. to get a custom kernel configuration there are several ways to proceed: Add everything necessary from a minimum configuration, or remove everything unnecessary from a maximum configuration (==our dist-kernel).

3. you can start a “make localmodconfig” AFTER booting with our dist-kernel IN your parallel existing /usr/src/linux-6.12.9-gentoo and get a config that includes all currently loaded modules as =m in your config and activates all static options that are also activated in the dist-kernel (save your old .config BEFOREHAND). This allows you to first check whether all options enabled as =m is statically integrated in your old config. If you have checked all options that are included with =m and are present in your old config, the problem must be due to a missing option that is statically activated in our dist-kernel. Then you can disable unnecessary static options step by step (e.g. everything for Intel on an AMD system). Finally, you should have everything you need in this configuration.

It looks like your Steam Deck's internal audio isn't working due to the acp5x audio coprocessor driver failing to load properly. The relevant dmesg log shows a "deferred probe pending" error for the acp5x_mach driver.

To resolve this:

Ensure the right drivers are loaded: Make sure the necessary drivers for the ACP5x audio are installed. The kernel modules snd_pci_acp5x, snd_acp_pci, and snd_sof_amd_vangogh should be loaded.

Check your kernel configuration: Ensure you have the necessary configuration options enabled in your kernel, especially the ones related to sound (ALSA, ACP audio, etc.).

Force the driver to load: You can manually try loading the driver using:

bash
modprobe snd_pci_acp5x
Or, check if the driver is blacklisted somewhere in /etc/modprobe.d/.

Check the firmware: Ensure you have the latest firmware for your Steam Deck, as it could help with compatibility.

Update your kernel: Since you're running Gentoo with a custom kernel (gentoo-sources), consider updating to a newer kernel version or testing with the vanilla kernel if problems persist.

Rebuild ALSA/Kernel modules: Sometimes rebuilding the ALSA or kernel modules can resolve issues with missing or misconfigured drivers.

Let me know how it goes!

Kaidezee,

please don't be confused when you read the above post. It was written by an AI (already banned). But I didn't remove it because it mentioned three kernel modules that @mega_flow already listed as necessary/existing ... maybe this post will help ...
