while attempting to complete an sudo emerge @preserved-rebuild after compiler update from binary repository, build log indicates
failure to create executable

. /etc/profile was run after GCC compiler update.

How to resolve the failure to create executable issue?

Was this update combined with a recent kernel update by any chances? Maybe it's not that (not sure how gcc would behave, I'd expect more an exec format error than library issues) but, given you're using kernel 6.7.0 and just to be sure, the new CONFIG_IA32_EMULATION_DEFAULT_DISABLED option is *not* set right? (by default it wouldn't enable it, but some users been answering 'Y' when doing make oldconfig and getting a bad surprise).

Then again I see this is 6.7.0-rc1 rather than 6.7.0 and update is probably kind of dated.

I do assume your issue are only with 32bit (abi_x86_32) either way perhaps for another reason -- I'd be kind of surprised if the binhost's gcc itself has issues though, haven't tried it myself to confirm but it has plenty of users by now.

One important detail about the amd64 official binhost is that it is "nomultilib" only. Hopefully this would block things like gcc and glibc with the multilib USE from being pulled (and no crazy override applied).

I am concerned about having "(-selinux)" in the USE as it may cause portage to interpret values wrong.

Ah, that would explain things if it was forced in somehow then.

Edit:
fwiw I do recall seeing users try to switch to no-multilib just to get the gcc binpkg (albeit I hadn't realized why given haven't tried it myself), so it shouldn't get merged in *that* easily -- albeit unsure how portage behaves with forced USE and binpkgs really.

If need to get back a multilib gcc, you can always run "quickpkg" in a stage3 chroot anyhow, but it may(?) still be able to rebuild itself normally with multilib if haven't lost multilib glibc though.

Your output shows that you are using a no-multilib gcc. Your config.log shows that libxcrypt is trying to build for -m32, which needs a multilib gcc. Your profile appears to be multilib enabled, so I suspect grknight's comment is correct. To confirm, what is the output of emerge --pretend --verbose sys-devel/gcc:13; emerge --ignore-default-opts --pretend --verbose sys-devel/gcc:13?

Reverted to the previous compiler from an xpak backup and ran . /etc/profile, However continuing to get "configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables" when attempting to emerge.

This is a Genloo installation that has been in use for years.

Previously packages from the stable and unstable binhosts maintained unofficially had been used without the issues currently experienced.

After the official binhost repo came on line in late Deceber 2023 three packages which take a long time to compile were installed.

They are glibc, llvm and gcc.

That appears to be when the issues started.

If you have changed binhosts so that you were getting multilib packages and now you are not. That would be a part of the problem.
The other part is how did you override the mismatching USE flags to be able to install a no-multilib package into a multilib system?
Portage prevents that sort of thing by default.

Is glibc broken too?
It needs USE=multilib to support 32 bit binaries.

LLVM does it differently.

The issue was resolved by converting to no-multilib, although shome packages from the binhost do not normally install, apparently due to non-matching use..
