Python conflicts and no python-exec wrapped executable found

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

Python conflicts and no python-exec wrapped executable found

So it's been a while since I did a world updates (2 months), and when I tried the typical emerge -Udn @world it was just pages and pages of conflicts and blocks. I go back and try digging through stuff removing things and adjusting use flags, etc., but give up after an hour or so. I just can't get past this.

At this point I'm just trying to at least get Portage to update so I can move on to ripping out what I don't need and putting it back later, but I can't get through even that.

Any suggestions? This is what I'm running into (it's a very long list of conflicts / blocks / masks etc.).

Or am I just doomed?

Code: Select all

# emerge --deep --newuse --oneshot portage -pv

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

I commented out the PYTHON_TARGETS and PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET settings in /etc/make.conf. Doesn't seem to make a difference whatever is in there.

One ornery culprit seems to be the dev-lang/python-exec package. It seems to be causing a slot conflict, even though it's the same version. Like the same version of python-exec is triggering a conflict? For the same version of the same package? I played around with various PYTHON_TARGET settings, but I get the exact same error no matter what.

Code: Select all

emerge -pv python-exec

when I tried the typical emerge -Udn @world
Plz try with

Code: Select all

eix-sync
emerge -uDUav --with-bdeps=y --keep-going @world --backtrack=250
and post your output.

As it stands now you are missing the "u" component ie "update".

IDK what "eix-sync" is. Did you mean emerge-sync? I did that.

Looks like all the same Python conflicts, and some perl, portage, and gemato conflicts, too. (I had to trim, it's too long to post without triggering the "Error in posting" issue)

Code: Select all

emerge -uDUav --with-bdeps=y --keep-going @world --backtrack=250

The problem seems to be app-portage/layman which is not supported and has been removed from the tree.
Use eselect-repository instead of layman.

I think I was only using layman at one time for Squirrelmail. It eventually broke entirely so I switched to RoundCube, and don't need layman any more. So...

Code: Select all

emerge --depclean layman
Then I tried @world again. Looks like it's going to try to merge the 703 updates now. THANK YOU!

just weird that I get this:

Code: Select all

Would you like to merge these packages? [Yes/No] Yes
Sorry, response 'Yes' not understood. [Yes/No] y
:P :lol:

Ok, well, I got a ways and then the system crashed and doesn't seem to be able to recover the interrupted emerge.

The culprit at this point seems to be caffeine. It doesn't like it when emerge isn't linked properly to the python version, or something like that.

emerge is currently kinda hosed. If I try to run it, I get

Code: Select all

emerge: no python-exec wrapped executable found in /usr/lib/python-exec.
ok, well, emerge doesn't live in /usr/lib/python-exec/python3.11, it's in /usr/lib/python-exec/python3.9. SO I can point there and continue my emerge, but caffeine dies - I can't get past that:

Code: Select all

>>> Emerging (4 of 545) dev-java/caffeine-2.6.2::gentoo
 * caffeine-2.6.2-sources.jar BLAKE2B SHA512 size ;-) ...                                                                                               [ ok ]

>>> Failed to emerge dev-java/caffeine-2.6.2, Log file:

Seems it has the same issue, but I don't know how to fix it:

Code: Select all

java-config --help
java-config-2: no python-exec wrapped executable found in /usr/lib/python-exec.
I'm also unable to use eselect, for basically ANYTHING.

Code: Select all

eselect python
!!! Error: Can't load module python

Code: Select all

eselect java
!!! Error: Can't load module java
Not even news

Code: Select all

eselect news list

    * check_do (core.bash:24)
    * do_action (core.bash:114)
    * main (eselect:215)
News items:
  (none found)
How do I get out of this, anybody have any ideas? Pretty much any atom I try to emerge fails with a long list of python conflicts (including python), and @world fails with that caffeine error.

dev-java/java-config needs sys-apps/portage updated.
sys-apps/portage needs a bunch of other packages as well.

I would recommend the following command:

Code: Select all

/usr/lib/python-exec/python3.9emerge --oneshot dev-java/java-config sys-apps/portage
This may say a conflict where another package needs portage. If it does, include that package on the oneshot line.

FWIW, 'eselect python' is no longer necessary or recommended to use at all to the point that it should be removed from a system.

Thanks, I've pretty much tried this kind of thing. There are a ton of errors and it always gets to setuptools-67 getting blocked. I'm scared to try to forcibly unmerge it for fear I'll break python (and portage) entirely.

    (and 15 more with the same problems)
Trying to emerge all of that stuff at once -

Code: Select all

/usr/lib/python-exec/python3.9/emerge --oneshot dev-java/java-config sys-apps/portage dev-python/tomli dev-python/installer dev-python/gpep517 dev-python/flit-core dev-python/typing-extensions dev-python/pyparsing dev-python/idna dev-python/more-itertools dev-python/jaraco-context dev-python/ordered-set dev-python/platformdirs dev-python/editables dev-python/pathspec dev-python/trove-classifiers dev-python/packaging dev-python/jaraco-functools dev-python/jaraco-text dev-python/nspektr dev-python/wheel dev-util/ninja app-alternatives/ninja dev-python/setuptools dev-python/setuptools dev-python/certifi dev-python/charset-normalizer dev-python/PySocks dev-util/meson dev-python/pluggy dev-python/hatchling dev-python/urllib3 dev-python/requests app-portage/gemato
Just dies with the exact same error. Basically the only thing I've managed to give emerge to get it to even TRY installing stuff is using @world -

Code: Select all

/usr/lib/python-exec/python3.9/emerge -DNuUva --with-bdeps=y @world
That at least tries to start compiling stuff, but it always errors out at caffeine with the "Can't run java-help" error, because it relies on the python-exec wrapper to be in place. Anything else dies on setuptools.

Try adding --keep-going option to emerge if the @world is the only option. This should bypass what it can that fails.

Trying to resume with --skip-first doesn't work either, it tells me I have an invalid resume list.

In that case, I would suggest --exclude dev-java/caffeine as well
