Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

News items: Please read them: https://www.gentoo.org/support/news-items/

Can't you reboot your installation?

You're far from the only one. :) Unfortunately this is very common, as seen by how often people with system problems post output including a line noting many unread news items - amongst which is the news item directly relevant to their problems.

i can't help but wonder if if it would make any difference if the label used for this stuff wasn't 'news', but e.g. 'alerts'; perhaps people are assuming that "news" isn't actually important (sometimes critical!) technical information, but things like "Our Web site has a fresh new look."

I don’t think it’s a gentoo thing. I think once people get what they want they ignore everything else. I think that’s just in general. Like I emerge stuff all the time but I’m literally oblivious to the news items. There should be an alert of some sorta like you cant emerge until you read this. Just my opinion. I think installing gentoo is when people or noobs do the most emerging

Perhaps, although i can imagine the overall response to such a proposal would be .... not enthusiastic. :) (Even if an command-line option were provided to opt-out.) That said, if Gentoo were to go down that track, it might apply to making people deal with configuration updates/changes (e.g. via `dispatch-conf`) as well ....
