KDE ebuild issues?

  • Quote

Post by whitt » Fri Dec 22, 2023 5:16 pm

I'm running an overdue update, and running into this:

Code: Select all

!!! The slot conflict(s) shown above involve package(s) which may need to
!!! be rebuilt in order to solve the conflict(s). However, the following
!!! package(s) cannot be rebuilt for the reason(s) shown:

(kde-frameworks/kguiaddons-5.106.0:5/5.106::gentoo, installed): ebuild is masked or unavailable
(kde-plasma/kwayland-5.106.0:5/5.106::gentoo, installed): ebuild is masked or unavailable
(kde-frameworks/kidletime-5.106.0:5/5.106::gentoo, installed): ebuild is masked or unavailable
(kde-frameworks/kxmlgui-5.106.0:5/5.106::gentoo, installed): ebuild is masked or unavailable
And before I go monkeying with it, I thought I'd ask here if there were a clean way to fix this... Seeing as how it's saying the ebuild is masked or unavailable, it seems like some other update has either deprecated these packages or masked them(?)

Anyway - thanks for any help. I'll post more info if needed.

You need to show *full* output including your emerge command.

I was hoping to avoid puking a mile long log up into the forum... but since you asked for it, here it goes : ) :

Code: Select all

~ » emerge -auv world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

NOTE: Use the '--verbose-conflicts' option to display parents omitted above

!!! The slot conflict(s) shown above involve package(s) which may need to
!!! be rebuilt in order to solve the conflict(s). However, the following
!!! package(s) cannot be rebuilt for the reason(s) shown:

(kde-frameworks/kidletime-5.106.0:5/5.106::gentoo, installed): ebuild is masked or unavailable
(kde-plasma/kwayland-5.106.0:5/5.106::gentoo, installed): ebuild is masked or unavailable
(kde-frameworks/kguiaddons-5.106.0:5/5.106::gentoo, installed): ebuild is masked or unavailable
(kde-frameworks/kxmlgui-5.106.0:5/5.106::gentoo, installed): ebuild is masked or unavailable

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously. If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously. You may want to try a larger value of
the --backtrack option, such as --backtrack=30, in order to see if
that will solve this conflict automatically.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

!!! The following installed packages are masked:
- sys-libs/binutils-libs-2.39-r5::gentoo (masked by: package.mask)
/var/db/repos/gentoo/profiles/package.mask:
# Andreas K. Hüttel <dilfridge@gentoo.org> (2017-05-21)
# (and others, updated later)
# These old versions of toolchain packages (binutils, gcc, glibc) are no
# longer officially supported and are not suitable for general use. Using
# these packages can result in build failures (and possible breakage) for
# many packages, and may leave your system vulnerable to known security
# exploits.
# If you still use one of these old toolchain packages, please upgrade (and
# switch the compiler / the binutils) ASAP. If you need them for a specific
# (isolated) use case, feel free to unmask them on your system.

For more information, see the MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge
man page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.
I'm having a hard time understanding what it means by "ebuild is masked or unavailable"

Usually I can work through these kinds of conflicts, but I'm confused here...

Do as told by portage:

There is no ebuild currently in Portage for that version. In this case, I see ebuilds for newer versions of those packages, but not for the specific outdated version you have installed. With the state of your system and the options you gave, Portage wants to rebuild exactly the outdated version you already have - but it is so outdated that its ebuild is no longer available, so it cannot be rebuilt. The straightforward answer is that you need to go back in time and do this update when that version still existed. The practical answer is you need to find a way for Portage to use a newer version of the package, instead of pinning on that specific outdated version.

Well thanks for the explanation! I didn't know that could even happen... My assumption was that it would just update the package... I am currently just updating the problem packages - it's going smoothly. Seems like it'd assume taht's what I'd want to do.

Well then... that worked for kidletime, but not the others.

FWIW - I can find no reference to these ebuilds in any of my package lists. I don't understand what is requiring a specific version of these applications...

As I said, for this situation, Portage wants to rebuild exactly the version you have installed. Updating may be acceptable to you and to the dependency graph, but Portage will not do that upgrade without direction from you. What is the output of emerge --pretend --verbose --depclean kde-frameworks/kidletime kde-plasma/kwayland kde-frameworks/kguiaddons kde-frameworks/kxmlgui ; emerge --pretend --depclean?

This is what I get from depclean:

Code: Select all

~ » emerge --pretend --verbose --depclean kde-frameworks/kidletime kde-plasma/kwayland kde-frameworks/kguiaddons kde-frameworks/kxmlgui ; emerge --pretend --depclean

You know, you could be a little more specific... 3/4 of your comment wasn't about --backtrace...

Tried it - no dice! But I had a spinner for all of like, a minute, and it got my hopes up that it would give me different results. So I'll give you credit for that.

whitt,

first of all I suggest to do a little bit cleaning with "emerge -c"

Then you should look into some configurations with:

Code: Select all

# grep -r "" /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords /etc/portage/package.mask /etc/portage/package.use
(if you get an error from grep about not found then pls shorten this command)

Please check it ... or give us the output ;-)

Next is "/var/lib/portage/world". You have:
Packages in world: 317
That is quite a lot ... maybe ... there are some lines you had updated in the past WITHOUT using the parameter "-1" (--oneshot) when doing an emerge. THEN you have some packages which can lead to a blockade. See also in this thread:

Hi, I would try the following:

1) let run the depclean, without --pretend
then
2)

Code: Select all

 emerge -auv world
^ this update command is not ideal, better, try then

Code: Select all

emerge -avuDU @world --backtrack=100

If the problem persists after following Josef.95's advice:

I'm not saying you should do this but if --backtrack with a sufficiently high number doesn't succeed (usually does, occasionally not) this sort of thing can be brute forced with targeted emerge -C'ing.
I spent a christmas in Vienna twenty something years ago. It was a beautiful city. Everyone was so friendly.

If this fails, please share the full output of emerge -pev @world --backtrack=0. Do not do anything else with that command until instructed to.

Thanks!

From here, I had to --resume --skipfirst a few times to get through it, but it's all updated now.

And FWIW, yes I have let my world file grow uncontrolled through failure to use --oneshot... I mean, I go 9 months without updating my machine, then just brute force my way through problems like this. How well maintained you think my system is?!? : )

But thanks for the help guys - much appreciated.

Practicing good maintenance on a routine basis may make these updates less painful in the future. ;)

Absolutely! I tell myself that every time I run into this, then promise myself I'll clean it up, then set a reminder to sync and update every month or two. But of course I never do that.

My personal PC has gone from something I actually use for work (decades ago) to being this thing I play with when working on SW or electronics at home... To be honest, Gentoo probably isn't the OS for me anymore, but I've tried ubuntu and genuinely just hated it. I played around with Arch for a while, but Gentoo and portage feels like home even if I keep making a mess of it.

I'm presently updating my kernel. Depending on how this goes, I may have an opportunity to try another new flavor soon ; )

In any event - these forums are a life saver.
