What desktop environment are you guys using?

Hello !

If there's anything I can contribute, I'd love to. I mainly use XFCE. Recently, I've been using i3. I really like the simplicity of WM. I'm very interested in DWM, but I don't know if I can configure it yet. Maybe one day? Then, is there a real difference with i3, I wonder?

I am a DWM user,using it with picom,animation is smooth as Hyprland
If you want a very beautiful dwm then you need to be very proficient in C language,it is written in C and can be configured by modifying config.h header file
And you have to compile it after every change to make it work
And also,you can just use somebody's fork,there are some I kow

I found that many long time GNU/Linux users are much prefer X rather than Wayland
Do you think it is time to switch it to wayland?

I mostly prefer X because it's where I started and what I still know. It works just fine for most use cases and has tons of available window managers and desktop environments. I have nothing against Wayland, nor am I attached to X, but after spending all the time customizing my environment just the way I like it, I'd need a compelling reason to switch. The last time I looked, sway was the closest window manager for Wayland to what I wanted, but it just didn't check all the boxes for me. That said, as Wayland becomes more widely adopted, I imagine there will be many more options in the next few years. I'll revisit it when the time comes.

That makes sense,I have a very good friend in real life who also likes Xfce,he used xfce for years with dark theme. I tried it before,but seems like can not handle hidpi very good(maybe that is my problem)
Maybe you should try LXQt if you did not.

I haven't noticed any problems with HiDPI (you can set both custom dpi and custom scaling with XFCE's GUI configuration tools), but my only high res monitor is 4k, so perhaps it's an issue with higher and/or less typical resolutions.

Re LXQt, yes, I'd probably be using it now if my favourite software wasn't nearly all GTK... and that's probably where I'll go if XFCE becomes too heavy or annoying. Or perhaps MATE.

My reasons for staying with X pretty much mirror the others mentioned here. Also, I enjoy being able to fwd X sessions over the internal lan when I want to.

As for DE, I've tried many / most, but have ended up on XFCE4 for all my current installs, with the main reasons being that a) it just works; b) I'm pretty familiar with it; and, c) These days I like to spend my time on the computer doing real work, and just don't have the time to fiddle around making the environment equally pretty and functional.

Gentoo provides a lean and mean "gnome-light" package, its great thats what I use.

Xfce4 with Motif window decorations.
Xfce4 I tried some time ago on RaspberryPi 4 and it was as fast as default WM (stripped down LXDE?) and I liked it so this is what I am using for now on my main PC.
Motif because it screams "Unix workstation".

Also one of the reasons I myself run FVWM. The motif look is just so wonderfully intuitive and appealing.
