Which is the usb2-port2?

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

Hi

today my dmesg was flooded with these massages:

Code: Select all

[ 705.891792] usb usb2-port2: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad?
[ 720.900139] usb usb2-port2: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad?
[ 724.971955] usb usb2-port2: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad?
[ 737.532144] usb usb2-port2: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad?
A lsusb returns

Code: Select all

Bus 002 Device 005: ID 0bda:8153 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8153 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
Bus 002 Device 004: ID 0bda:0411 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Hub

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
but it seems that the name and port used by dmesg does not match the one of lsusb (or I might be interpreting it incorrectly). I would say, that usb2-port2 would match Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0bda:0411 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Hub. But that is not the case, because after removing that eth-usb converter, the messages kept coming.

After some trial&error I got the culprit, a ANKER usb hub which I'm unable to find it in the list. On this USB hub I have 2 dongles (one for a cherry wireless mouse and one for my jabra headset). The funny thing is that both were functioning correctly, I could use my mouse and hear via the headset.

Only after removing the USB hub the messages stop coming. These are the entries that were missing after removing the USB hub

Code: Select all

Bus 001 Device 007: ID 046a:0702 CHERRY Wireless Dongle
Bus 001 Device 009: ID 0b0e:24c7 GN Netcom Jabra Link 380
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0a12:4010 Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0bda:5411 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTS5411 Hub
So, what does dmesg mean with usb2-port2? What is the mapping between dmesg and the output of lsub?

There is no discrete mapping. "usb2" is how it was discovered by the kernel and will be referenced earlier in dmesg or in /var/log/dmesg or similar logs depending on configuration.
For example, this is from one VM I control:

Code: Select all

[ 0.976995] ehci-pci 0000:00:1d.0: irq 20, io mem 0xfac50000
[ 0.984071] ehci-pci 0000:00:1d.0: USB 2.0 started, EHCI 1.00
[ 0.984256] usb usb2: New USB device found, idVendor=1d6b, idProduct=0002, bcdDevice= 5.15
[ 0.984363] usb usb2: New USB device strings: Mfr=3, Product=2, SerialNumber=1
[ 0.984465] usb usb2: Product: EHCI Host Controller
[ 0.984547] usb usb2: Manufacturer: Linux 5.15.102-gentoo ehci_hcd
[ 0.984632] usb usb2: SerialNumber: 0000:00:1d.0

So, I basically must go through the whole dmesg to find the usb usb2: New USB device found,... line?

edit:

Ok, that helps, in my case

Code: Select all

[ 5.548375] usb usb2: New USB device found, idVendor=1d6b, idProduct=0003, bcdDevice= 6.01
[ 5.548954] ata6: SATA max UDMA/133 abar m2048@0x81406000 port 0x81406380 irq 132
[ 5.549608] usb usb2: New USB device strings: Mfr=3, Product=2, SerialNumber=1
[ 5.550916] usb usb2: Product: xHCI Host Controller
[ 5.551553] usb usb2: Manufacturer: Linux 6.1.53-gentoo-r1 xhci-hcd
[ 5.552188] usb usb2: SerialNumber: 0000:00:14.0
[ 5.553555] hub 2-0:1.0: USB hub found
[ 5.554264] hub 2-0:1.0: 8 ports detected
..
but what is the meaning of -port2 then?

It is also possible to look through the path /sys/bus/usb/devices/usb2/.

The port is the second port of that hub that it announces. This may also be under the sys structure.
