Konsole: Configure Keyboard Shortcuts Menu Missing

  • Quote

Post by John R. Graham » Sat Jul 29, 2023 2:02 pm

This happened relatively recently but I'm not sure precisely when. Some of my keyboard shortcuts went missing...and the menu to edit the keyboard shortcuts (Settings / Configure Keyboard Shortcuts) went missing as well. This is happening with both konsole-23.04.2 (current stable) and konsole-23.04.3 (current testing).

Did I miss a KDE/Plasma abstraction change where this functionality was pulled out of Konsole into some more general settings space? The trunk version of the Konsole Handbook still describes the menu, but documentation sometimes lags.

I just checked here: Wayland, Konsole (stable 23.04.2) Keyboard shortcuts still work for me. Settings>Configure Keyboard Shortcuts brings up the Configure Keyboard Shortcuts - Konsole window showing a list of default shortcuts and alternates.

You could try running konsole from the terminal (konsole.) It should open another window. In my case it returns to the bash prompt. One of the two instances might have some output available. For me, the output is found in the newly launched instance, not the spawning konsole instance.

have you tried via STRG+ALT+, <<< last is a comma - to see if the menu is appearing anyway.

What key is "STRG"?

Edit: Never mind: it's the "Ctrl" key. Wow! That worked. Thanks! The menu entry is completely missing on the Settings tab, though, which I expect is a corner case bug, because others are reporting that the menu entry is there for them.

you're welcome - to understand you correctly - the menu appears with the keys i mentioned, although the menu is not present ?

maybe, some package got upgraded and because of it other ebuilds need a re-compile too - just a guess, because KDE is full of surprises, even after simple updates, imo.

If I understand you correctly, yes, the Configure Keyboard Shortcuts dialog appears when I hit Ctrl+Alt+Comma, but the Configure Keyboard Shortcuts menu item is missing from the Settings drop-down.

have you tried with new start of konsole, by moving current settings elsewhere and starting fresh? - or better with a second new user.

are you using plasma wayland?

I'll give the configuration exercise a try before reporting this upstream. I'm able to use both X and Wayland: I verified that the symptoms were the same under both. I'm tending to avoid Wayland right now because the screen refresh performance in Wayland is notably slower vs. X—at least with the nouveau drivers. (I haven't used the proprietary nVidia driver in some time.)

some weird things going on with kde - found some bugs - maybe it's related:
There's many more.

I recently put the global menu in the title bar, just to try it out again.
Big mistake. Ever since, I have been fighting to get the menu bar back in so many apps.
Dolphin, ksudoku, konsole, just to name a few.
In some cases, Ctrl+m helps, in others it doesn't.
e.g. for ksudoku I couldn't find any way to get it back other than to edit the rc file.

I really would not recommend anybody to use the global menu unless they are 100% sure they will never want the menubar back.
from https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=385951 and https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=466107 and https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=449561

i'am really not sure - last time i used kde was very long time ago.

have you also tried different theme in kde?

John,

I'm still using Konsole 22.12.3 on my laptop running previous Stable kde-apps, and Settings > Configure Keyboard Shortcuts works. I'm about to upgrade to the latest stable kde-apps, so will check if there is a change and report back. But I wonder if the QuickCommands plugin could be having an effect. Do you have that plugin selected (Plugins > Show Quick Commands), by any chance? Is there a file ~/.config/konsolequickcommandsconfig in your installation? If I understand correctly a user's post in a Manjaro Linux thread, he has a file ~/.config/konsolequickcommandsconfig containing a '[Shortcuts]' section with all the shortcuts in the 'Configure Keyboard Shortcuts' window.

John,

I have now installed the latest stable kde-apps with and konsole-23.04.2. 'Open Menu' > 'Settings' > 'Configure Keyboard Shortcuts...' exists, and keyboard shortcuts work. So I'm not sure what the problem is in your installation. :?

I use i3w with some kde-apps, so also konsole, and in my system 'Configure Keyboard Shortcuts...' exists and works.

Maybe kde-frameworks/kglobalaccel isn't installed (I'm not sure if is correct package).

Thanks to all of you for the input. I also discovered that the menu item exists in konsole-23.04.2 on my at-work Gentoo installation; the problem is manifesting on my at-home laptop. Both are running neurotically up-to-date, stable Gentoo. I've yet to investigate the config file suggestion, though. This weekend for sure. Just to be clear, the Configure Keyboard Shortcuts dialog exists and works (when invoked with Ctrl-Alt-Comma); only the menu is missing from the Settings pull-down.

Some more answers to help above:

While I was busy on my day job, I started a full --emptytree rebuild of the system, which completed last night. Alas, it had no effect (which I guess, all in all, is a good thing).

It's installed.

John,

Any joy yet?

What is the output when you launch Konsole from the command line in e.g. xterm, Yakuake or other terminal window? I see the following:

Code: Select all

fitzcarraldo@clevow230ss ~ $ konsole
kf.xmlgui: Shortcut for action "" "Show Quick Commands" set with QAction::setShortcut()! Use KActionCollection::setDefaultShortcut(s) instead.
kf.xmlgui: Shortcut for action "" "Show SSH Manager" set with QAction::setShortcut()! Use KActionCollection::setDefaultShortcut(s) instead.

Try this.
https://www.autoaprendizaje.es/2022/03/ ... nu-global/
Deactivate applications menu daemon from background services
Delete application menu button from windows decorations
in konsole type
cd ~/.config
find ./ -type f -exec sed -i 's/MenuBar=Disabled/MenuBar=Enabled/g' {} \;
close konsole
open konsole
SHIFT+CTRL+M
Si algo falla LEE el jodido manual, Si sigue fallando LEE BIEN el jodido manual.
