FIXED: Telegram-desktop No sound and video within calls

Hi,

I am using telegram desktop on 2 amd64 machines:
  • On a Desktop with pure ALSA
  • On a Notebook with pulseaudio
I used the source based version. Since 4.4.1 on both machines there is no sound or video when calling someone.
That means:
I can open and play videos
I can open and play audio messages
I can even create and send audio messages
===> but once I call someone, I do not hear anything and the peer does not hear me. When I enable video, it is the same behavior: I do not see the peer´s video and he/she does not see me. But nevertheless, the call starts and and runs until one of the participants hangs up and I even hear the signal tone "plingg" when the connection is established.

What I did to find the reasion
1. I installed telegram-desktop-bin-4.4.1 on the desktop: The same issue happens like described above.
2. I demasking version 4.6.3 on the desktop but it behaves identical
3. Purging the config directory of telegram - no change

Update: I am now deleting all dependencies and build the whole stuff again and test - cuirrently running .. will report the result asap.

At the beginning my guess was something with ALSA/Pulseaudio but since the laptop with pulseaudio setup behaves identicially I assume missing pulseaudio cannot be the root cause.

What drives me crazy is, that I cannot find anything related to this when searching the net. I cannot imagine that when calls are completly inoperable that nobody has the same issue than me.

thanks and regards
Erdie

Update:

1. Rebuild of the dependency tree did not help

2. I tried to add to package.use:

Code: Select all

kde-frameworks/kimageformats avif jpegxl
dev-qt/qtnetwork sctp
(because telegram complains that ..)

and enable sctp in the kernel (maybe this was forgotten to define in the telegram ebuild)

--> Unfortunately no change :(

Im am thinking about if something went wront with media-libs/libtgvoip ..

Update:

Audio and Video within groups of multiple participants are working flawless!

(But anyway, peer to peer calls do not work)

My guess is, that direct calls are using a different kind of network protocol / encryption and therefore the calls are failing and group audio not. Therefore I will have a look at the kernel. 1st I will boot an old one and 2dh I will inspect the configuration.

Has anyone a clue? Any hint are highly appreciated!

Another guess:

Both machines were recently upgraded to kernel-6.1.12. Maybe there is something wrong. I have now downgraded to 5.15.94 and will test once I found someone who is willing to make a test call with me (not easy in the morning)

==> No change with kernel 5.15.94 :(

I intalled ZorinOS in a virtualbox, installed telegram-desktop in that box - version 2.6.5 --> Works!

Therefore I installed the lastest available version in Gentoo, version 2.6.3 --> Voila, this works!

Conclusion: Gentoo contains a non working version in the stable branch. Will open a bug.

How can this happen? The latest stable version of a Voice over IP applicaton is unable to make phone calls and I am the only one, who had this problem? Does nobody use telegram?

I thing multimedia is not the right place for this. Can a mod move this to Desktop Enviroments? Thanks!
