This is for anyone who does not yet know. I only found out yesterday myself.
Bob Raitz, known here as pappy_mcfae, passed away last November. He was the brain behind Pappy's Kernel Seeds and Pappy's Preconfigs. I don't have any details about how he passed away, and neither do his friends on Facebook, but it appears to have been sudden.
He was a good man, and I'd like to say a little about him.
Yesterday, Bob reached out to me on Messenger. It didn't sound like him. After exchanging "how are you's," a final message from him - which I was not able to read - was deleted and the user was not available on messenger. I came to his page to message him to see if that was him. I learned from posts by other friends that he had died. I had no idea. Did I get spam? Did his spirit reach out?
I knew Bob through the Gentoo forums. For a time I hosted his Kernel Seeds project and used them in Gentoo Studio. I also knew him as an incredibly talented and creative man. He recorded a harp passage on one of my songs, which will now be cherished, as will his Nurtured Seed album. His rough edges only made him more interesting. I will miss seeing his no-punches pulled posts on Facebook and occasional chats with him.
I hope his Kernel Seeds and Preconfigs continue to be improved upon and that he lives on through those in Gentoo Linux.
Thanks for that audiodef, I didn't know and that's really sad news. Pappy's seeds were a key resource and learning tool for many of us I'm sure. They certainly were for me.
This is the first I am hearing about this. It's truly sad. Pappy helped me more than once back in my day with various kernels, he was an amazingly friendly and helpful guy... RIP
