How many folks knew that Gentoo gnu/Linux is named after a specie of penguins ? They happen to be the 3rd largest of all the species (behind the Emperor and King penguin's)and are the fastest swimmers of them all. :D

Anyone who has read the FAQ :P .

^ Then it is virtually unknown, as it's my considered opinion, that among most Linux users, the only thing read less than the F'in manual are the FAQs !!! :P

I of course had no idea about this, as think I'd rather cut my tongue out and feed it to some penguins, than compile an OS from source. My hat is off to all Gentoo users of the world. You people must be tough ! Was watching a Jim Carrey movie in which he winds up getting sent a bunch of penguins, a guy from some Zoo shows up and he said, hey they're Gentoo's.

Of course this led to me saying WTH did he say and firing up Google to find out about Gentoo penguins and the connection to this madcapped thread. :D Ah just thought it was kinda cool. People here more likely to know, most Nix users elsewhere, doubtful.

In other Gentoo penguin news: Again Wikipedia says they're the fastest swimmers, reaching speeds of 22mph. This prompted me to google a Leopard seals top speed and rough search set it at 22.9mph. This makes me feel somewhat sorry for the cool lil Gentoo penguins, as am assuming these seals are some of their natural enemies and if true have just a hair of a speed advantage.

However hopefully this means that the Gentoo's are and have to be smarter lil buggers, as well as fast. :D

^ Thanks, some nice and interesting info on Gentoo's there. :)

PS, all these random tidbits are definitely going in my fun Linux trivia file. Took a Jim Carrey comedy for me to find this out, was a good movie and since I've had way too much coffee, as usual .. can't help wondering if the writer chose Gentoo at random or if perhaps they're a Gentoo or other Linux user. What are the odds they'd pick Gentoo as the specie out of all of them ?

PS2, For sure am suffering from lack of sleep and TMCS = too much coffee syndrome. Though had another thought, remember reading recently how much gnu/Linux is used in movies for CGI and similar now. Am taking this to support Gentoo just wasn't chosen in this movie for strictly trivial reasons. :)

Put in context post: First result (maybe someone broke it more recently but) spit out by Google said ..
The highest speed reached by a (human) swimmer is 5.05 mph by David Holmes Edgar
Also, due to just starting coffee intake, Wikipedia-or-etc said Gentoo's reach top speeds of 22mph but technically 22.9mph is still in that range. Thus hopefully they're just as fast as predators like a Leopard seal. Though still hopefully smarter. I feel a bit sorry for anything being chased by a dang Leopard seal, things must be like a torpedo with a maw full of sharp teeth !

PS (now that I've had too much caffeine), Upon further reflection on the matter. Actually think Gentoo's could swim mucho faster, given the right motivation. For example ... am willing to bet this David Holmes Edgar guy could move A LOT quicker than 5.05mph if they dropped a Great White in the pool with him. :P
