Nextcloud or Owncloud

  • Quote

Post by 67comet » Fri Jun 04, 2021 1:05 am

I've got a server (old 32 bit desktop computer that I run headless with minimal install) that is in another part of the state. The woman I built it for takes a lot of pictures and I had planned on setting up her server with Owncloud (or NextCloud), but neither seem to be available anymore, in portage anyhow).

Ideally I'd like to give her WordPress and *cloud so she can have her images saved AND make her website easily (she is very busy, and not very computer savvy).

I'm not "new" new, but I do have to stumble around before I get things figured out.

Are there any available applications that are as easy for a non computer person to use for uploading their images as one of the *cloud applications? I had OwnCloud installed on my Raspberry pi (running Raspian) and she liked how that worked (auto uploading her images as she took them like Google did with their free accounts until the other day).

I tried to follow a few tutorials on here, and some that I found around the webs, but they were a few years old, and too much has changed for me to figure it out (hell, adding applications to the unmask list kicks my butt sometimes).

Looking for ideas and some assistance.
Thank you.

Both ownCloud and Nextcloud are available in Portage for ~x86 arch:

https://packages.gentoo.org/packages/www-apps/owncloud

https://packages.gentoo.org/packages/www-apps/nextcloud
Clevo W230SS: amd64, VIDEO_CARDS="intel modesetting nvidia".
Compal NBLB2: ~amd64, xf86-video-ati. Dual boot Win 7 Pro 64-bit.
OpenRC systemd-utils[udev] elogind KDE on both.

Thank you :D, I'll get in and tinker with my files (I can't remember which one will get the www-apps/owncloud ~x86 or www-apps/nextcloud ~x86 flags but I know it's in there with the use and package files (/etc/portage/?/*.use I think) .. It's sad how quickly you forget the little things on the distro you cut your teeth on (back in 2004'ish).

It shows a version of NextCloud as stable. A few years ago I began using a dedicated server with NextCloud to sync the desktop at home and my laptop that I was using in the office. And had three separate drives backing the work up, too much time invested in creating it. Glad I'm no longer doing that job. I was way busy back then and just used the 16.04 LTS Ubuntu for the server.

To unmask a specific ~x86 package by keyword:

Code: Select all

mkdir --parents /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords
echo "=www-apps/owncloud-10.7.0 ~x86" >> /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords/owncloud
echo "=www-apps/nextcloud-21.0.2 ~x86" >> /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords/nextcloud
or, as flysideways pointed out, instead of doing the above you could merge the Gentoo Linux Stable x86 version 20.0.8 of Nextcloud if you don't want the latest version in Portage:

Code: Select all

emerge nextcloud
If you have unmasked Nextcloud by keyword then you would use the command:

Code: Select all

emerge =www-apps/nextcloud-20.0.8
The Wiki has several articles on accepting a keyword for one or all versions of a package. I personally never use the --autounmask and --autounmask-write options; I always unmask manually.

Thank you, I did get Owncloud (portage version) installed, but mysql isn't playing. I'll start a new post with that issue.

I have been playing with owncloud and nextcloud on my server the last couple days and I think owncloud will server her best. Nextcloud is a lot more "stuff" for her to remember and learn.

Thank you again.
