[solved] urw-fonts package causes my fonts to act weird

  • Quote

Post by Jebbe9 » Mon Feb 15, 2021 8:56 am

Upon installing a package that pulled urw-fonts as a dependency my fonts broke

Some output:

Code: Select all

 * Messages for package media-fonts/urw-fonts-2.4.9:

 * If you upgraded from urw-fonts-2.1-r2 some fonts will look a bit
 * different. Take a look at bug #208990 if interested.
The question is where can I look at the bug? I looked up urw-fonts in the packages.gentoo.org but there's no bugs specified.

The bug report says that the bug is irrelevant nowadays?

@jebbe9: you said that "my fonts broke". That's very vague. It's nearly impossible to help you with that description...

What exactly happened? In which programs do you get broken fonts? In all programs? Or only in some programs? What does 'broken' mean? Do you see boxes instead of characters? Or are the characters blurry?

What happens if you (temporarily) uninstall urw-fonts?

Please post the output of 'emerge --info'.

Sorry for being vague. My fonts overlap in my st, I don't think it affects anything else or the difference is so subtle that I don't notice it.

Normal: https://i.postimg.cc/pLYxzFzb/urw-fonts.png
Broken: https://i.postimg.cc/xjzdqqxY/urw-fonts-broken.png

And as you suggested I temporarily solved the issue by removing the package, which makes the font look normal again.

Your 'broken screenshot' shows st with a non-monospace font. Most terminals require monospace fonts.

I get a 'broken' output like yours if I start st with an invalid font:

Code: Select all

st -f "FontthatDoesNotexist"
st then uses a fallback font - and for some reason, it decides to use a non-monospace font.

What happens if you start st with

Code: Select all

st -f "Liberation Mono"
or

Code: Select all

st -f "monospace"
Does it give you a monospace font, even if urw-fonts is installed?

Code: Select all

st -f "Liberation Mono"
It gives me a monospace font: https://postimg.cc/tYkyTMnB

Iosevka is the font I'm using and I tried the following with and without urw-fonts installed:

Code: Select all

st -f "iosevka"
With urw-fonts not installed it worked fine but with it installed I get the same broken output.

Does

Code: Select all

st -f "Iosevka Term"
work?

What's the output of

Code: Select all

fc-match "Iosevka Term"
It should be:

Code: Select all

iosevka-term-regular.ttf: "Iosevka Term" "Regular"

Setting the font to "Iosevka Term" in config.h seemed to fix it. I had for some reason set it to just Iosevka and I have no idea as to why it worked before.

Thanks!

It might be the case that previously, the only acceptable match for Iosevka happened to be a monospace font, such as Iosevka Term. Some change, possibly not the one you initially suspected, may have made plain Iosevka a better match for the search, causing plain Iosevka to be used instead of Iosevka Term. Since plain Iosevka seems not to be correct in this application, that change would result in your reported problem.
