Gentoo forks - twice!

According to the BBC, scientists (why's it always scientists, never, say, Tarot readers :-) ?) have discovered Gentoo penguins are in fact 4 different species.

Goverp,
Thanks for linking that news! :)

Why Tarot readers, ornithology is a good old science!

Gentoo penguins, which go by the Latin name Pygoscelis papua
If I describe three new species, I would definitely call one of them Pygoscelis nonsystemdensis :D

Appeal to authority and all that. Surely you aren't going to question science? Never mind that you have to base it on the data they provide. Unless of course you go get your own penguin core samples.
gentoo penguins have become isolated from each other to the point where they don't interbreed, even though they could easily swim the distance that separates them.
Any changes to the classification will need to be reviewed by an international committee of scientists
Ah, yes. The same type of organism that suffered gastrointestinal distress from planet Pluto.

I would like to clarify that I didn't mean at all making a fork of Gentoo without systemd. As it was said, Gentoo is a metadistro, so it doesn't make sense to make such a fork, because other init system can be installed easily without any fork.

It was just a joke meaning that Gentoo is one of the few (meta)distros allowing not to use systemd, I could say Pygoscelis non-hemiptera or Pygoscelis albuquerquensis.

There is a difference between a user being able to do it and a official support for being able to do it. In such a case where a "fork" might occur, it really would be a group of people providing the "support" by means of ongoing maintenance of the changes from the original. That could be as simple as an overlay, but it might also include significantly different changes to profiles and/or defaults, installation media, bug tracking, vcs, etc.

I really didn't expect that my bad joke would contribute to so serious discussion. I've seen a message in gentoo-user list about "capitalising" and have understood that my joke may look as not a joke. And I was just happy to talk about birds on this forum :?

Said that... For me, as a user of OpenRC, more support for it could be only good. But I can't think of using a distro other than Gentoo... I've been using it since 2009.

I didn't notice the joke, but now that I see it, I think it is amusing and mostly harmless. I did think your comments about a fork were notable (I disagree as the greater the differences from "stock," the greater the burden of maintenance).

<necropost>
Of course, the forks (and hence penguins) should be
  • Gen-1
  • Gentoo
  • Gen-free
  • Genfor
