Kernel console scroll removal + fbcondecor patch...

  • Quote

Post by CaptainBlood » Fri Sep 18, 2020 10:09 pm

Yesterday's kernel updates for 5.x & 4.19 have had their console scroll feature removed.
Thus 4.19 fbcondecor patch has been removed since console scroll removal breaks it.
By the way, Mpagano did a great job keeping it until that very end,

For those wishing to manually apply 4200_fbcondecor.patch
  • dryrun first
remove the 2 failing hunks from it.
    re-dry-run for testing
patch if you decide to go further
Worked fine here...

Wait.. Why 5.x? Well, here kernel fbcondecor patch has been from the start ported to 5.x & working flawlessly.
I ain't ready to publish it but be aware it's very feasable.

As a side note, I found that console scroll removal silly...
I've heard about you since the minix period, and respect all the good work done, but hey Linus remember some users might enjoy such a feature while build their system, sometimes on very ressource limited boards ...
Kernel changelog mention something possible revert though... which I don't feel accredited to claim for. Seems more distro teams targeted, IMHO.

Thks 4 ur attention, interest & support.

Well, I for one understand Linus but that's indeed unfortunate as it's always when you need a seemingly unimportant feature to help you fix a critical issue that you no longer have it at hand — Murphy's law, for short. I do use it [soft scroll back], casually indeed, but it comes more than handy when Xorg goes nuts or some graphical applications messed up... Guess we'll have to rely on screen or tmux now. Or shove everything through less.

+1
The real thing seems to be::twisted:

Code: Select all

We don't really have anybody who maintains this code
Since I'm maintaining fbcondecor here, I might spend some time to set a console scroll reverting patch.
In this respect, I'm a bit worried by Linus changelog comment mentioning bugs::(

Code: Select all

...people look more closely at some of this code, and
there were more problems on the vgacon side, but also the fbcon software
    scrollback.

Well, I can only wish you courage and strength [I haven't yet touched kernel development and I'm not sure I'd plan to anytime soon]. Thanks a lot for your hard work. I do mean it.
