I understand no uploading to forum server bit why there is no option to use external forum picture hosting services?

Why do you think you cannot use an external host? You can use the url tag to link to off-site resources.

Note that some users will react negatively to screenshots of text. Screenshots of actual graphic windows are fine. Terminals should have their text copied and posted inline.

How do I do that?

I tried

Code: Select all

[img]link to img[/img]
but couldn't post screenshots.

Code: Select all

[url=https://.../image.png]see this image link[/url]
I don't believe there's a particular need for it to be displayed on these forums, interested users will click.

At least one user had a need to post a screenshot and couldn't :)

There simply has not been a feeling of need to have them displayed here directly, since, like mentioned, interested parties can follow the URLs instead.

I personally feel displaying images inline clutters threads unnecessarily, and if I were to show them here at all, I'd probably still resize them to something rather small, so one might still need to click them to really view them (my personal opinion, not that of the whole admin/mod team).

I'd still probably rather not enable them at all though.
Kindest of regardses.

Why not giving an option?

Most hosting sites generate links with small thumbnail anyway.
Broken links to pics aren't any less annoying if it's just a link.

There would be very few instances where ot would be useful but it these cases it would simply help. Otherwise it wouldn't affect anybody anyway.

It's as simple as re enabling img code.

This is why, this option would be abused immediately.

Look how many members abuse the "quote" button and fill threads with unnecessary quotes. We do not need images added to it. That's the real world, some people have faster fingers than brains.

The moderators have a hard enough time cleaning up spam posts, if img tags were enabled they'd have to spend even more time getting rid of dodgy "adult" images some would spam across the forums.

If you need to link a screenshot, just host it on a 3rd party website and use the url tags to link it in your post. That's how it has always been done here.

C1REX,

We all hate copy typing from an image that could have been posted as text.
Copy typing is prone to errors, so images should be discouraged.

The forums are currently 100% accessible from a minimal livecd, which doesn't have a GUI. It would be preferable to keep it that way.

The feature was once enabled and was subsequently disabled.

However, search was not disabled and still works to a degree.
